So, the next attempt to match the awesomeness of the first in the series is finally out. I've yet to play it myself, but plan on doing so shortly.
Until i get my hands on it, please feel free to torment me with how incredible it is, or sadden me with how disappointed you are with it. I'll be sure to share my own thoughts eventually.

Edited by: Ravenzfire on 24/08/2011 16:39:12 Played and loved the first game. Never got around to the second. Playing DE:HR feels very similar to the first game with some obvious modern updates. I'm really digging the cover system and how seamlessly it transitions in and out of the standard fps controls. The voice acting, the main character especially, is pretty awful. I've only played a few hours into it but I'm loving it so far. Apparently your decisions and actions can greatly affect the flow of the game so I'm curious to see how things turn out later on based on what I've done already.

Been having a pretty good time. The open endedness makes it more addicting than other shooters.
Only bad part so far is the voice acting and animation on some characters.

How is the health system in the game? I've heard it has regenerative health and I'm interested in hearing how it has been implemented. Feel free to go in to as much detail as possible, since a bad health regen is a game breaker for me and it would be a shame if I had to pass up the game because of it.

I haven't timed it, but as an off-the-top-of-my-head estimate it takes about 30 seconds to regen to full health. Health displays as a percentage, and you die FAST if you get shot in combat. Enemy with a pistol in close will kill you in 4-5 shots, one with a shotgun in two. Plus you can die by falling 2 floors down without the correct augmentation. It's definitely not a "duck into cover for 5 seconds to fully recover" system. ______________________________________________________ PVP is a question that has no one right answer but a lot of wrong ones. - Aelana Anais

There's a natural regain, but you need to not get shot for it to come back...takes a bit. Can take pills or other stuff to instant. However a few shots will kill you in the game. I've gotten one shotted by a shot gun a few times heavy machine guns a few hits as well.

Thanks for the replies. I just don't get why they didn't implement it just as an optional augmentation like in the earlier games or even just give a pathetic regen as standard with optional upgrades for those who like to play with fast health regen. The implementation doesn't sound too bad though and I'm glad to hear guns have been kept so deadly in the game.

I actually got it yesterday based on a review I found on reddit (still in pre order status since I live in EU...). Apparently it has some nice deeper thoughts to it then simple minded action.

It is an augmentation... Just one you come equipped with. Maybe in HC mode it's not activated... I dunno im playing on normal.

From the stuff I've found and heard in the game, it appears that Adam would have died without that implant, which is the in-game explanation.
Personally, I'm having a blast with it. It's a LOT better than Invisible War was. I've got about 13 hours played so far and just made it to Hengsha. ______________________________________________________ PVP is a question that has no one right answer but a lot of wrong ones. - Aelana Anais

Playing the crap out of this all week (I work weekends) and just beat it at 26hrs according to STEAM.
4/5... game. RPG side is awesome. Shooter side is very fun and has a neat cover system, but has a lot of stupid flaws that game developers really should have learned not to do by now.
RPG: Good conversation mechanics. Hidden stuff. Side stuff. Hacking is done well. Story is GREAT. You can't however choose where you go to, and you need to totally set aside the main quest to do side stuff at times... but at other times setting the main quest aside will hurt you. The very beginning is a good example. If you don't rush to the chopper at the start to do the first mission, the hostages are dead when you arrive and SWAT thinks you're an evil bastard corporation. (This is literally the first minute or two of the game after the tutorial, not a spoiler at all.)
No faction levels at all. Main character is an ex-cop and every cop in the station knows him, but you can walk up and kill three of them in plain sight then leave, and when you come back it's back to 'Hey there, Jenson!'
My playthrough was hyper aggressive and I killed just about everyone, which no doubt lost me a lot of side stuff. There was one time when someone offered me a three part mission to bust a dirty cop... one part had you meet with him first thing, so I walked to the meeting and put a bullet in his head. Immediately lost the whole series and whatever she would offer after that, because she wouldn't talk to me anymore. lol...
FPS: Shooter side makes a lot of really classic mistakes like bosses with tons and tons of HP but no life bar displayed. You can 'take cover' but enemies can still hit you if they spray your cover sometimes vs if you just crouch. Guys will fire at you like rambo until you kill them, but if you kill a guy -even one that hasn't gotten a shot off- he'll have only 1-4 bullets in his assault rifle and only 5 bullets extra on his person, if any. Shooting a guy in the head from behind/below is nearly impossible, always counts as a back shot.
AI is bad... which is confusing because some people seem to praise the AI in this game. I walked into a stairwell one time and guards on the catwalk above and on the bottom floor (who can see me and eachother at the time) both go 'I don't know if he's still around...' and 'I lost him...' all at the same time, and started forgetting me immediately. They will stop and refuse to go past certain points and again just start waiting to forget they ever saw you, making hit-and-run an automatic win in most areas since your HP regens and theirs doesn't.
Alarms are compartmentalized and guys from the next area won't come in and help their buds. Their whole area just stays green two offices down or inside the building the outer guards have to protect and the inner group doesn't know anything is wrong, which was just stupid to me. I wanted some big awesome fights but I never got more then maybe six armed enemies at a time because the ones inside just didn't care that their buddies were dying with alarms blaring and explosions going off.
In one place I killed every soldier and destroyed every robot but the hostage scientists won't leave out the front door until I go through the story triggers anyway and then it shows tons of guards being distracted and running everywhere in the cutscene.
HORRIBLE AI do not let people tell you otherwise just because the enemies talk a lot and take cover in random places.

Well i'm in the thick of it now. Did the first few main missions and working on a bunch of side ones. Have to say so far i'm impressed. I play stealth when given the chance, and i've played any stealth game you can name, but the AI in this seems much sharper (haven't seen any AI bugs yet, but you see one or two in every game so it's just a matter of time). So far i've been trying not to kill anyone, either avoiding them or knocking them out, and it's had me reloading saves quite often. I think with some stealth augmentations things will be smoother. The hacking can be quite difficult beyond the easiest level, too, but again, i imagine it will become easier with augmentations.
Story is good, with lots of interesting little details here and there which may or may not have anything to do with anything. The free roaming in the city is great. Lots of sidequests fleshing things out. The cover system is taking some getting used to, but i'm growing to like it. Don't have any real comment on gun combat as of yet, because i've just used my tranquilizer gun which operates like a sniper rifle, but i just had to drop it to make space for an assault rifle, so the bullets will be flying soon.
Has anyone played it on the hardest difficulty? I always do that after my first playthrough, and i'm thinking this one might be a little crazy.

I started it for my 2nd. You die easier, but you always died to quickly on normal mode that this doesn't bother me at all. The main thing is nothing is highlighted. Items, doors, walls you can punch out, items you can move. They all just blend in. It's jarring after playing through looking for the orange glowy bits, and I have to kind of remember what all the items look like and how big they are.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a mass effect clone with Neo from the matrix as the main character.
It's full of low res textures and 2 polygon hairstyles. Crashes all the ****ing time and is overall a huge disappointment. "Sweet Jesus, It's an Anti-AT field!"

I do not agree with that, I am such a Mass Effect and Bioware fan it borders on fanboyism but Deus Ex Human revolution is the better game, story telling wise they are on par with each other but the depth of gameplay is far better in Deus Ex.
The first person shooter with cover mechanics concept is better than straight 3rd person with chest high walls (its the first time I have played a game where they work in fact, In F.E.A.R. 3 for example they where terrible), the weapons and customisation are more complicated and deeper, the "powers" provided by the augmentations have greater complexity and more involved and there are more of them, and finally the hacking related mini games are better.
Personally I love the Matrix meets Blade Runner art style to.
I have had no graphics problems or problems with crashes either, not to say they don't exist of course because it all comes down to individual hardware and software configuration but the forum are not exactly inundated with complaints either so the problems seem to be limited, I hope they bring out a patch that fix the problems soon because buying a game that doesn't work sucks balls and I can understand why you are ****ed off. I am guessing that because I have no problems is part of the reason that I find the game more fun than you do.
But instability issues aside its a better game than either ME games.

The weapons and customisation are more complicated and deeper, the inventory system is better than the utterly **** system in ME (ME2 didn't have one). The "powers" provided by the augmentations have greater complexity and more involved and there are more of them. The environments are better because you can explore the areas and they are larger and more complicated than ME2 and to a lesser extant than ME, the choice of route through a mission area greatly affects how the mission plays out and you didn't have that in either of the ME games. Finally the hacking related mini games are better also.
Personally I love the Matrix meets Blade Runner art style to. I don't understand how you can call it a clone either since the Deus Ex franchise started in 1999.
I have had no graphics problems or problems with crashes either, not to say they don't exist of course because it all comes down to individual hardware and software configuration and there are some complaints on the tech support forums so the problems seem to be limited to things like USB headsets and Nvidia GPUs, I hope they bring out a patch that fix the problems soon because buying a game that doesn't work sucks balls and I can understand why you are ****ed off. I am guessing that because I have no problems is part of the reason that I find the game more fun than you do.

QFT, Deus Ex 3 is pretty good game I enjoy it alot (I'm also a big Mass Effect fan too). It has way better cover system than ME and I have nothing againts the matrix theme. The missions are alot of fun because u can play it as you like: just sneak by, kill every1, find secret routes or talk your way through in some cases. And yeah the hacking mini game is okish too better than what ME2 has.
The story is interesting, too. Only down side that I personaly don't like is the voice acting - it's pretty bad especialy the main charater's.
Also the game never ever crashed for me and I have like 20-30h play time so far. And the graphics are okish.

Visually the PC is miles ahead, and since you are using conventional FPS mechanics for the shooting attacks I'd recommend the PC version, apparently the loading times on console are also fairly attrocious, even on PC they're fairly major. For the cover play I can see the console version feel a bit smoother though.

DEFINITELY a mouse game.
The shooting part is really secondary... but it's still very brutal. You will die almost instantly on medium difficulty if someone shoots at you in the open and unlike most games the enemies are good shots and the ONE good point for the AI is it remembers your last location, so if you keep popping up in the same spot you'll get dropped real quick. You need to move to new locations often, and then quickly aim from cover. Can't imagine trying to do that with a thumb stick.
