Thinking of recording some solo pvp and need a low cpu usage recording software.

Low CPU usage means heavy-duty HDD usage, which in the end could actually mean you end up with a worse performance overall.
Fraps is decent enough, but for my taste, it's TOO light on CPU usage and too heavy on HDD usage.
Personally, I'd like some recording software that dumps it all in at least DivX/Xvid format on the HDD, if not H.264 directly (not sure if any such recorders exist, if they do, I haven't found one yet).

I use a four year old PC and record to a second HDD using Fraps.
No issues with CPU and even recorded the Jita stress test @ 30FPS with over 2,000 pilots in system.
Solo PvP should be fine.

Was using fraps, really did lower my 50 fps down to like 15-20

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you set it to record at 15 or 20 FPS, it *will* lower your FPS to that exact amount first

seperate hard drive works well, i would also tweek your graphics settings, lowering the resolution and or detail settings puts less stress on the system to make that video file.
I also suggest compressing/encodeing the file as soon as you are done to free space. I use handbrake for this task, it does a roughly 50 to 1 compression.

you may not have the hardware in that laptop to record video, really the best way to record HD video is to have seperate drives, which a laptop does not. And to use a faster sata interface like SATA 2 or 3 which your laptop probably doesnt have. And finnaly you need spare CPU cycles to capture the video as it is not captured on the GPU, so more than 2 cores is preferable.

You guys are dancing around it, so I just felt I needed to put it together...

Use a HDD heavy recording software rather than a CPU intensive one. (Frapps is good.) Install it on a different HDD from the game and record to that HDD the game isn't using.
I haven't tried it, but most videos are only counted in the MB and fraps is a small program. You may even be able to run it and record to a cheap flash drive if you get one with a good transfer speed. Newegg.com lists transfer speeds IIRC. This is speculation though.

this is correct, raw HD video is roughly 1gb a minute. If you ever listen to the podcasts of people who do youtube gaming they are always belly acheing about render times and this is why.

Did a tiny bit of googling, and apparently, you can use VirtualDub to capture game video and runtime-encode it to H.264, but you're going to need some serious spare CPU power to pull it off...
