Hi everyone. I currently fly a Machariel in missions and my DPS is decent for my not-great skills. As my skills improve, my ability to kill with the Machariel is going to get better and better. However, I've got an alt who is just about done perfecting all the mining skills that she wanted and needs someplace to put skills. I was thinking of trying to turn her into a dedicated tank for eventually dual-boxing level 5 missions (probably still bringing some friends along for bonus DPS and general fun).
So, what is your opinion on the best tanking ship for Level 5 missions, keeping in mind that the ship/character won't need to do any respectable DPS or have any damage mods fitted? My understanding of Level 5 missions is that I'm going to need a very solid passive shield tank. I'm guessing that means I need to be looking at the Vulture, Nighthawk, Drake, Rattlesnake or Tengu?
I'm playing around with different ships and fittings in EFT, so this isn't an "im lazy and want u to do my thinking 4 me cuz i cant be bothered to do it" type post that I sometimes see. I'd just like opinions of some people more experienced than me. Thanks in advance!

The Rattlesnake is the king of passive shield tanks. And you can assign the drones to your main which is nice.

Edited by: Reginald Ruettelplatt on 04/09/2011 12:32:00 Never having done a level 5 mission myself i was wondering how much energy per second would get neuted away if one flew at a great distance from the NPC's (on a cruise missile equipped ship for example).
Is a passive tank imperative or can one get away with active tank + range if one fits 40 surplus capacitor energy or something like that ? Is there a way to solo at least some of them with something like a typhoon from range with shield boost, cruise missiles and surplus energy, even if the mission would take very long dps-wise ?
Also,is it possible to destroy the neut towers from range quickly? How tough are they ?

one umm fortress and cap a carrier out and kill it with ease to put the nueting into perspective... two, tengu can tank like a mad man as well as rattle but rattle needs t2 rigs for most missions which are stupid expensive so combination on tengu and nighthawk for blaster npc missions pretty much covers it and its cheap
ps yes blockade runners can run some but its kinda silly to have a toon train blockade runner to five and its hard to gab agro with no gun slot

If you're planning on Gurista/Serp level 5's and you have HIC 5, start with an Onyx. With T1 Purgers, 3 DG resist amps and the rest T2 gear, it'll tank 2.2k dps on Kin/Therm with a sig rad of about 230m. It's a lot cheaper than a Rattler, Tengu and tanks better than a Nighthawk. The Rattler tanks another 200dps with a similar T2 fit, but it has double the sig radius. It's good because it can output some dps from sentries, but it's a big target in a lowsec system.
A Tengu similar fit will tank nearly 2.5k Kin/Therm, plus you can opt for the cloaky subsystem and stick a CovOps on it, at least to move in/out of system. But it's a big pirate attraction once it is decloaked and tanking in-mission.
If you're going to hit Angels.. someone else can advise. And as for Sansha.. well I haven't a clue lol /Signed |

Nighthawk is what I'd use. Or Onyx. Tengu isn't really worth it when you can just stick a cloak + mwd on the nighthawk to move it around safely and when you do get ganked you lose ~1/2 as much isk.
