Any of you guys play Eve on a laptop? I have been looking at the Asus G74 and the Toshiba Qosmio. My budget is <= $1500. Any suggestions on others to look at?

My suggestion is that unless you're a student or traveling a lot, do not get a laptop at all.
1500 will go much further towards a desktop setup, and won't have any of the problems laptops do.

Being a student is why I am getting it. I already have a desktop set up. I just want whatever I get to be capable of running the games I play (with Eve probably being the most consuming). I know I could get by with a cheaper laptop, but.. this is my limit nonetheless.

How about you save the money for something else and get something that's just "good enough" not "best I can get for as much cash as I can spare", eh ? Especially since in 2, maybe 3 years tops, your 1500$ machine will be eclipsed in performance by sub-700$ laptops easily.
610 USD should be enough for decent "in space" single client performance in EVE - very likely somewhere close to 50 FPS at the 1600x900 built-in 17+" native display resolution and at max graphic detail in a moderately crowded area (and probably only around 15 FPS in CQ at max graphic detail, but, eh, who bothers to load the station environment these days anyway).
If you ramp down the graphic detail, things should work quite smoothly even with two instances, maybe even three instances could be "playable".
Power consumption at peak usage should not go noticeably above 50W, and at near idle it's probably not even 15W, so the battery (when brand new) should last a bit over one hour at peak gaming power or almost 4 hours on light-duty work. This also means heat will not be THAT much of a problem (like it is for "classic" gaming laptops). It also means you could probably play EVE for well over 2 hours at rather minimalistic graphic details on just the battery charge, which is not bad at all.
I'd say that's pretty damn decent for a relatively cheap laptop... well, if you ask me, anyway. Sure, it's not that much of a "gaming" machine, but if EVE is one of the most graphically demanding things you play, that should be more than fine. And go buy something much more useful with the remaining almost 900$.

Thanks Akita. You have a good point. I may continue looking and see what else is out there; I have been pretty much only been looking at laptops around the $1200-$1500 range. Besides, my desktop is being looked at to see what is wrong with it, no telling how much that will cost. xD
+500, Akita, you have helped to answer quite a few of posts in the past few weeks :D

Well I play on an AMD 350 laptop with a radeon 4250. It was about 430 USD, for that price i can run eve with everything turned off with the exception of turret effecs. So if you need some sort of addiction fix you can do that.
I would much rather have a 400$ laptop that playes eve and a 1100$ desktop to also play eve and everything else. -------------

Edited by: Astenion on 05/09/2011 23:21:04 I don't get this entire, "I'm a student so I need a laptop" thing. The only reason you'd need a laptop as a student is if you:
A. have a band and need it for live situations
B. use it in your job (but you don't have a job that requires a laptop because you're a college student; if you DO have a job that requires a laptop, then you're probably wasting your time in college)
C. want to hang around in coffee shops like a douchebag
Either buy a desktop for gaming or buy a laptop for working or buy both, but a laptop CANNOT do everything a desktop can. You know all those people whining about how Incarna blew up their video cards? Yeah, they were using laptops. Laptops aren't built for gaming unless you're playing WoW or some other game with 8 year old graphics. You CAN use a laptop, but don't start complaining when you wanna play Skyrim and it fries your entire system from overheating. I'm using a 5 year old machine and my card rarely gets over 50 degrees at max load.
Why WOULDN'T you buy a desktop? If you need it for school work then guess what? You can do that on a desktop. You don't want a laptop; you want a toy to kill time with in class that will also let you play games. You're not "on the go"...you're a college student.
Buy a kickass desktop with that 1500 bucks and then buy a notebook and some pens for class. However, if you just HAVE to have a laptop, just get a Mac. You'll be able to play Eve with dumbed down graphics and it'll still be relevant a few years from now.

A good buy. I personally spent $1,300.00 on an ASUS laptop at Best Buy, and I must say I am impressed with it. No graphics issues. The only downsides are it gets a bit warm like all laptops, and the CD drives tend to crap out a month later. ***** ***** ***** *****

The Asus is OK, got an Asus myself, works fairly well, and has some nice cooling designs to it making heat a non issue. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
