Hi all, I've been doing some research into this question and cant really find a good answer. I have been using a torp fit Golem with 2 TP's and an AB and wondering if I should swap to Cruise Launchers seeing as how they can go so much farther and hit smaller targets. If I do swap what are suggestions for replacing the TP's/AB if at all?

you would be better off just changing the launchers to cruise for missions that are going to benifit from the range boost.
Torps and TPs is what makes the golem so damned fast you wouldnt want to use cruise all the time, the low dps will make you cry after a while.
Also torp explosion are cool, cruise are not.

Golem with t2 torpedos most definately , like the previous poster mentioned it is the tp s that makes the golem so fearfull in pve , and you should really use t2 torpedos and the right rigs and you can hit targets up to 50 k to 54 k away depending if the closing or trying to move away from you any targets closer than 30 k use rage torpedos or caldari navy issue torpedos Only inrare occasions like the first room of WC you might want to use cruises instead of flying all the way to those 2 spawnsbelieve me the golem ismade for torpedos ---------------------------------------------- God knows everything but a true amarrian knows everything even better |

Torps for PvE Cruise missiles for PvP (unless you want to hug gates)
No options, really. ---

Thanks for the replies all. The only thing im concerned about is the damage torps will be doing to cruiser size ships... Would I be wanting to change to javelins? My Drone skills suck right now so I'd be looking at using my high slots ideally.

Javelins do less damage and offer no benefits based on target size.
Two TPs work fine against big slow cruisers, and three for the smaller faster ones.
Drones will often only be used against frigates, since torps often kill the cruisers and larger before your drones finish chewing on the frigates.

If you think a mission would be better off with cruise missiles, get a CNR to run those missions. There is NO benifit to running a cruise golem over a cruise CNR. Torps on the other hand are what make the golem shine - have fun with those. If you are worried about hitting cruisers, swap to a 3 TP fit and drop the afterburner (if you have good skills, you can just switch to javelin to hit those pesky ships hanging out at 55km).

Every Caldari agent level 4 i have ever done has been fine in a Torp Golem. With the right skills and rigs you can get 60k with Javelins and 43k with Rage. You also don't need any more than 2 target painters t2 with max target painting skills.
If you want to optimize your level 4 mission running you should work towards a Machariel. They are the level 4 end game.

On a mission fit with t2 ammo, cruise CNR does 100+more dps than a cruise Golem..
Have 1 of each, switch to CNR on missions you feel cruises would work better..
Easy really..

a cruise golem is very effective and fun to fly. however it will mean changing rigs and using 3 sentry drones and be willing to use T2 precision cruise. so in other words you can't just use that one golem you got and swap between cruise and torps. so you're better off buying a 2nd golem and fit it for cruise if you so choose.
but if you still have a navy raven collecting dust in a hangar then just use that for a cruise ship.
as is with your current golem fit you really need to use 3 target painters and don't be a cheap-ass and use faction ones to be sure. i use 3 domination TPs with my golem.

care to share your set up? I use a 2 tp golem, and am thinking of adding a third painter. Just not sure how big the difference will be. I'm hoping it will come in handy especially on those elite cruisers
Aat the OP. I use torps with 2 velocity rigs and a velocity implant. I can hit out to 40K with cn torps which is fine for the vast majority of mision, and just carry some javelin torps for the longer ranges (can it hit at 60+km). I never used a cruise golem, but I've found this a vast improvement over my cruise cnr

I have been told that if you increase the velocity of cruise missile to 10000m/s, it will rarely be shot down by defenders of enemy ship.

Edited by: Ruban Spangler on 08/09/2011 13:33:49 Golem is made for torps no question about it, else it would not have TP bonuses. However I've tried both and use cruise for missioning. The main advantages of cruise are range, and the ability to refit your ship with a bigger tank. Cruise golem frees up mids (no need for TP) and rigs. It is not as quick as a Torp golem but is much less hassle especially if you omni and perma tank it.
I use torps for ratting and anomalies
