If you intend to make a carreer in missionrunning, even tho i am true amarrian and i darely love my paladin, i would go for a vargur, all marauders are skill intensive and take a while before you profiecient enough to fly them, and a big price tag,why a vargur because it doesn't really matter what kind of rats you fighting with your autocannons and changing ammo your isk/hour ratio ( mmeeh) will be the same , while in a paladin this will slow down while fighting guristas and angels
pirate daction battleships are probably even better and not as skillintensive , altho you still need good skills and know your missions to fly one, but are even more expensive But to b e honest a well fitted maelstrom or abbadon both perform just aswell ---------------------------------------------- God knows everything but a true amarrian knows everything even better |

Paladin will do more DPS because you're operating at your optimal and not falloff, however the Vargur can select damage types, so i'd say if you're only going to be fighting Sanshas or Bloor Raiders then there's no reason not to choose a Paladin, however for everything else go with the Vargur.

Yeah if you can get both, do it. They are definately a fine ship to fly.
Just remember to get the Marauder skill up to 4 before you use it though, got to put the bonuses to good use :)

Edited by: salty alt on 02/09/2011 10:00:19 Okay... in short both are good ships, but noticeably bettered by their faction alternatives.
Paladins are good against EM + Therm weak enemies but dont do so well against other resistances. You can fit either Tachs (use faction for their cap use) or Mega Pulse + Scorch for similar damage at slightly less range but with better tracking and cap usage. Paladins have an excellent tank if setup correctly with T2 rigs and 5% hardwirings added. Uses minimal ammo.
Vargurs on paper do less DPS but have selectable damage type so you can use them again against anything. Excellent tracking but you need to get in range to apply more of that DPS... its about half of your optimal before your DPS increases *alot*. Best tank of all the Maruaders... you can make them cap stable with Pith XL boosters (though you dont need to). Uses alot of ammo.
I'd rate a Vargur over a Paladin for say missioning, its situational as to what is best -depends on what you want to use it for.

never piloted the paladin but the vargur excels at killing close range target, from 5 kms to 20 kms. It melts close range ships from cruiser to BS like angels ( who, most of them, orbit you at 10 kms ) . It does ok dmg from 20 to 30 and not so good after 30 kms.
Its the ideal ship for close range pve, I fit mine with MWD , at full MWD speed, it does around 1km/sec so going under half your falloff is not that much of a problem. Otherwise you can always load barrage, which is a the long range matari ammo.
If you plan to salvage and loot wrecks for the occasionnal meta3/4 item , I would highly recommend it , it does very well against angels, and good against serpentis but not that good if you fight a lot of sansha. IF you fight gurista, dont use marauders as their low sensor strengh makes them prone to being jammed ( which is a real PITA )
If you dont plan to salvage and loot or fight guristas, just use a Machariel, its a monster ship, extremely fast and does very high dmg ( a bit bit higher than the vargur ) , it have also a large drone bay.

train T2 large proj spec to 4, matari and galente BS to 4 , put 3 gyros II and 2 Tracking enhancers II in lows, a few 800 ACs II in high and you re set
After that, you can always push matari BS to 5 , its worth it.

Already have that pushing matar BS to 5 now. So I can use t2 guns and just finished shield tanking skills. So thats opened up some avenues. Not really intrested in caldari ships meself.
