Apparently you should work on your math AND social skills, because apparently you don't trust your friend to tell the truth.
I can help you with the math part though:
If the T3 blueprint costs X and the materials to build the blueprint cost Y then the total of X + Y should be lower than the sell price of said T3 blueprint product.
If you want to discuss Reverse Engineering, then the formular is a bit more complicated ... apparently.

R.E. Success Rate = base rate * (1 + reverse engineering skill level * 0.01) * (1 + (datacore 1 skill level + datacore 2 skill level) * 0.1)
So the datacore skills are more important than Reverse Engineering.
* Wrecked relics have a base probability of 20% and a run count of 3.
* Malfunctioning relics have a base probability of 30% and a run count of 10.
* Intact relics have a base probability of 40% and a run count of 20.

T3 can be a big loss if you don't know what you are doing.
Large skill start up, large isk start up, and you need a pos.
There are profits to be made. Download my program and you can compare them (Here). The thing to watch out for is what modules to make since you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting one that isn't profitable on subsystems.
