These seem to be quite useful, but I always seem to have to launch them manually.... is this right?
I have target locked a single target. He fires a missile. I manually fire a Defender, off it goes, and destroys his missile. He fires another..... so do I need to click on my defender missile lnchr again? Or will it detect and launch? If the latter, I think mine is broken.
Thanks in advance! --------------------------- |

u do have to activate it manually for each missile, unless there already is a stream of missiles in the air, then (if you have the launcher on auto repeat) it will continue to launch defenders until all incoming missiles are destroyed
However, defenders always target the closest missile to you, even if there is already a defender on its way to take that 1 out. Also, u need 3 defenders to kill a torpedo now. 1 defender will take all the other types of missiles out

Thx for the fast response Eyeshadow. OK, so it's manually launched, as long as I know.
I haven't come up against anyone with torps yet, but thanks for the 3 missiles heads up :) --------------------------- |

Warning: If you launch say 20 defender missiles, they will all go for the closest enemy missile to you. Once that is destroyed, they will not go for the next missile, they will fly around in circles and die.
You will have to begin launching a new batch to deal with that one. ------------

Question: if you launch a defender (say press F1) then does that just launch one defender if you have the launcher on manual. What if the launcher is on automatic?

Then it will keep launching defenders until all the missiles coming towards you are destroyed, then stop. If there are a lot of missiles coming towards you though, you'll probably die first. ------------

hmmmmmmm...best way to use these suckers is to mount a rocket launcher. A 'Limos' rocket launcher is pretty cheap, all things considered; It can fire one rocket/defender every 3.6 seconds; It can hold 10 defenders at a time without reloading; in 3.6 seconds enemy rockets/light missiles will travel 3.6km
That means if you have a stand off range of roughly 12km you can handle a volley from 3 enslaver sansha frigates handily, since defender missiles travel 3000m/s and with the scenario described you could hit 'autorepeat' and let the rocketlauncher handle it.
personally, i use two microsmartbombs and be done with it. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

1. Necromancy is best left to the professionals. Leave the dead in peace.
2. Smartbombs do can damage incomming missiles, but there's usually a very short window of opportunity for a SB to hit a missile.
3. Read the date on a post before replying to it. Necromancy is bad. _______________________________

Since it's been necro'ed already, guess I'll add to it all I know about the subject:
1 - The post about light missiles saying it takes 3,6 seconds for them to travel 3,6KM is wrong. Or maybe it was right when it was posted. They're much faster than that now, at least. Most missiles start off at 3 750m/s. Or at least light missiles do and in the item database on the main site even cruise and heavy standard missiles also go at this speed. Now you can receive speed bonuses from both skills and ship bonuses. So you can quite easily beat 4KM/s.
2 - Considering 1, you'd have to be pretty good at timing smartbombs considering the missiles will go through the bomb's radius within a second for most bombs except the largest ones.
3 - The defender missiles have an explosion radius, considering a single ship can fit several launchers, if the missiles are fired all at the same time, you might destroy more than one at a time. However, that also means that if the person is smart/knows you use defenders, they may delay their launchers so you can't catch them all. This may also happen with multiple NPCs sporting launchers.
Which leads to :
4 - I think you'd be better off with some other equipment than defenders, personnally. I can't see it being too useful in fleet battles unless they can shoot down missiles that are not going straight for you but also at other fleet members. And even against NPCs, unless you use something with a faster reload like mentionned 2 years ago, it's likely you will get hit during reloads by other ships. Even if you don't you will have fewer missiles than they do. Chances to get hit will still be high, I think. It also uses high slots and launcher hardpoints that could be used to kill them faster. Enemies dead faster means they get to hit you for less time. Simple maths.
And all this means that basically, the most reliable ways to deal with missiles would be to either use resistance boosting modules instead, which will also help against turrets or outrun the missiles. This means you need a ship that's already fast enough, stick a MicroWarp and most probably overdrives on it. Something like 5KM/s would probably make you safe from most missiles unless you're going towards them or something like that.
Disclaimer: Take my post with a grain of salt, I have done my homeworks, but I'm not an experienced player.

At last check, you can manually lock target on missiles in EVE trinity :)
Maybe you can fire guns at them now? nullnull |

This thread is terribly out of date. Missiles have changed a lot since this was posted. Please people, check the date of posts before you reply to them

It's not that out of date, defenders still suck.
