So what's the actual game about? Generic space simulator doesn't exactly fill me with excitement these days. I think it was a different millenium when we last had a good one. |

And in that Millennium those space games were made by Mr. Chris Robberts, yes the same guy that is designing this game :)
Just take a look at the website (assuming you can get on it, since it seems to be under some heavy pressure atm )
I really doubt this is some generic space sim, it seems to be a cross of wing commander and privateer in a persistent universe (one that shares the same payment scheme as guild wars 2 ) |

Don't just drop this on me; sell it to me. It takes two sentences to describe something; maybe three if it's complex. "Space game" isn't a good way to describe a game anymore. |

You know you can just check the website and decide for yourself :) I'm not chris robberts nor affiliated to him, so I don't see why I need to sell it to you, I'm just posting here to make you aware of this game and pointing you into the right direction, so you can make your own decision :) |

HOT CHICKS IN SPACE good for you as a selling motto?
Though Im still stuck in Privateer 2 the Darkening, that game made me waste insane amounts of time back in the day, it was an interactive movie, privateer 1 with better graphs, space opera plus awesome random missions. I remember I spent several minutes in every single system trying to get random missions when I had finished it ... such dark times in my youth ... Hope this game delivers! btw all the privateer fans which do not know about the independence war series (IWAR 2 in particular) should give it a try. The game isn't very well known but shares the same concepts and was even developed from some of the same devs. (including realistic physics and stuff). I remember it as last game i played with a joystic. a eve-style bounty system https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=359105 You fail you fail you fail you fail you fail you fail you fail to jump because you are cloaked |

This looks awesome.
As an old Wing Commander I also immediatly recognise some of the Sector and System name as well as the design of the Carrier as it is a hommage to the old (Bengal Class) Tigers Claw. Tigers Claw (old)

Also, unless I am mistaken one of those ships looked very much like a Dralthi as well as a Kirathi symbol showing on that console. Not gonna lie, super excited and going to throw some money at it. |

So, I just read the IGN article on this game and what I'm getting is that it's EVE, but with less MMO, more action?

George Lucas made the Star wars movies and the god awful prequel movies. Being good at something once upon a time isn't a quaratee of quality now. Chris Roberts hasn't been involved in gaming for some time and is now mostly knows for producing movies, so I'm guessing it's mainly his name and reputation being used to get people hyped up about the project. My feelings for this project were summed up by another poster.
Quote:I have a healthy dose of skepticism and fear of someone promising so very much, with numbers seemingly pulled directly out of his ass. "Ten times the graphics! Forty times the ambition! It'll do everything you ever wanted in a space game! Everything! It's an MMORPG! No wait, a single player game! No - both!" Hi, have you met my friend Peter Molyneux? Maybe he could give you a lesson in over-promising.
I also fear any new entry into the MMORPG market. It's over saturated, exorbitantly expensive, and a genre that chews games and studios up and spits them out, broken and bleeding. After you're done talking to Peter, talk to Star Wars: The Old Republic, and discuss how much they spent making a game that isn't making them that much money (relatively speaking). I'm sure your two million dollars will cover the cost of development. No, really, I believe you. When you're done talking to them, you can talk to the broken corpse of Mythic, which you will find cowering and whimpering and wrapped around Bioware's ankle.
I mean, I pine for the days of Wing Commander and X-Wing as much as anyone. I loved that genre. I miss that genre. I'd love a sandbox space RPG. I'd love to believe he's going to deliver everything he promises. But his pitch is ludicrous. |

The guy made exactly 1 movie, which is more or less a cult movie and apart from that he has always been involved with creating games. Every single one of those games was a top notch game.
I will admit the same could be said about Bioware, they made quality games, but SWTOR wasn't one of them. So yes an amount of skeptisism is in place for this project. Maybe this game will suck in the end, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, I pleged $60 to him, which supposedly grants me the game as well, so i'll see.
Also there has actually been a game designed by him, called freelancer that had both the persistant world in multiplayer form and single player intertwined. It just wasn't massive, because at the time, the technology wasn't advanced enough to have such a game, so the guy actually does have knowledge on that front.
Again time will tell, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and mind you the 2 mil isn't the only money he has, he apparently also received money from private investors :)
