Hi. I have an old Dell Precision 650 workstation. Totally happy with it in most respects BUT... I would like to improve the graphics card (and AGP x8 Nvidia FX500/600) and stop using the horrible on-board sound system.
Any recommendations for:
a. A sound card, b. an AGP x8 graphics card.
All dedicated to eve (that's all I play). :)

Whats your budget?
And how much system RAM do you have?

A system of that age needs a little more than a mere upgrade Im afraid. When I say upgrade I think of when you buy better version of a limited selection of components.
Go for an entire new pc... the sellers usually got some nice package deals.

What Nihn said for the most part... But, post more specifics about your computer..
I am trying to look up Dell Precision 650 Workstation and from what I can tell that computer was meant for multiple monitors and such and has a Quadro video card in it which explains your FX 500.
For a sound card get something like a Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Gamer and for a video card, if you've got the cash get a Geforce FX 6800.. Then you'll never have to upgrade for a long time. --------------------------------------- Sig for rent... Make offer.. Noob has to make some cash somehow.. |

Yeah I *know*. It's the dual 3.06Ghz Xeon/2Gb Memory, and the Scsi Ultrawide 130 RAID. So it's not too hopeless.
Budget.. upto $500 I guess. Possibly more if I get to use Dual DVI and figure out how to find enough $'s for the Apple 30". 8P

He's on a budget of around $500 and you link him to an Alienware shop? Something around $500 that runs good should be this.. it's just an example, you can change many things. Switching to AMD should also save you some money.
AS8 Mainboard ($90) Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz ($160) 512 MB DDR Ram ($85) Radeon 98 Pro 8x AGP 128 MB ($210)
This lands you below $450, but leaves you without sound card, case and power supply. I think you'll be able to finish below $600. Prices vary on your country, this is my rough estimate based on what I usually pay.

Decent comp, Intel though. Athlon 64s are ridiculously fast at EVE. But for a graphics card, go for an x800XL (if you can find an AGP version) or the 6800GT. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

and for sound, you really don't need anything better than a Soundblaster Live! Value PCI card.
