I'm in a selfsuffcient military corporation. I'm exactly where I am supposed to be: not in an alliance.
Alliances are made so that people can protect themselves in a group. I know it's very hard for people to understand this. I know that the war system in EVE doesn't understand this either. Unless you can protect yourself, you group together to gain protection by numbers. Simple natural selection - hunters few, prey flock anew.
The interesting thing here is, though if I go back to the original question, that industrial corporations is not wanted to help out. Having experienced alliance leadership, all I can say is this: industrials stay away, you are civilians let the military handle combat. Why? Industrial inclined should not participate in combat because they are prone to panic, have problems following and/or executing proper orders, lack the organisation and coordination with leaders to make efficient team mates, as well as brings down morale of the alliance when they inevitably loose a ship. Each alliance must work out there own ways of enforcing a civilian participation with the military efforts. An alliance in EVE can be run in two ways: military organization or civilized nation. The latter being the true intent of the alliance system, but the first the only truely workable organization type under the current alliance system.
There are some prime liabilities when it comes to alliances: 1. They do not attract combatants. Allainces have diplomatic relations, try to ensure peace with neighbours, and will thus experience extensive lax periods of peace. 2. The people in most dire need fails to learn the safety precautions. A typical situation in human society, there are numerous ways ambitious and concerned people try to make life safe and simple for people, but noone cares to take part of the information. When disaster strikes, not enough people know what to do.
These two factors result in the following: alliances attract and contain mostly so called soft targets. This is true for most alliances, and I dare say all alliances. The only thing you can do as an alliance leader is try to keep a large number of military aware personale inside the alliance or closely affiliated with the alliance. Force of Evil has their fair share of soft targets, but the military awareness is enough that most of FoE can function well under coordination of leaders Force of Evil is the best example I know of in EVE that can represent a military organized alliance. Xetic is another example, where the alliance, compared to most other alliances, function on a more national level than military. Xetic tend to work well with high orders, but there is a serious lack of military awareness and leaders. Xetic is the text-book example of a civilized nation in EVE.
In much the similar way as Xetic, the industrial individuals in this game attract a lot of loathing because they have goals in direct opposition of the military inclined. The industrials wish to build empires, the military wish to destroy them. Militaristic individuals have a very unhealthy attitude of "they do not deserve it", which needs to go.
Humble yourself, and know that warfare will always be funded by the ambitions of nations. Nations are built by people, not by corpses. --
