First of all they are not smart at all: press a button and boom every thing in a range of X km gets hit.
Then whats their use?
- They goo boom and hit nothing since very few fights be it PvP of PvE will see an enemy get close enough to get hit by a smartbomb
- The damage they do versus the cap they use and the speed at which they can be used makes them quite inefficient
- The do make cool rings around your ship though 
Should then not be modified so they have a bigger range of blast doing less damage the further stuff is away from it. Or should their cap usage be somewhat lowerd so they are more inline with other weapons when it comes to damage output versus cap usage?

smartbombs are useful for gate camping in 0.0
Get a battleship with a bunch of large ones, approach a gate and position youself in the way of insta-jumping pilots from another gate. Activate them all as soon as you see something warping in. If it's a frigate or pod, you'll get it.
but yea, Smartbomb is a dumb name, they should have been called Pulsebombs

Well - they don't destroy you own ship, that's pretty smart! 
Otherwise they would be called suicide bombs... 
(sorry - someone had to make this post, and they called Weirda's number to do it...)...

I just wish they didn't use quite so much cap, and didn't blow up your drones.

Smartbombs are as smart as their users.
In your case, I can see why they would be worth calling 'Dumb Crap'.

depends on what your fighting I have 2 on my raven and when I geta swarm of 10+ interceptors on me they coem in very useful.

Would be kewl if they have "Smartcones", these would fire an area effect cone in a 60 degree arc in front of you...

If you wanna get crazy.. how about Chain Lightning!
You'd activate it, lightning strikes nearest target for 100% damage, then jumps to next nearest target within radius of effect, but not to previous one, for 80% damage.. Then jump again for 60% damage, then for 40%, etc

don't forget about blizzard storms and polymorphing your opponent!!

Cone of cold, magic missile, fire arrow, healing circle, protection from normal missiles (wtf are there not normal missiles?), magic stone, turn undead, animal summon, etc.

a BS with a large smartbomb laughs at any ship who is reliant on drones for any of its offense, the ishtar especially. |

Vicker is right, if you think smartbombs are useless, your the only thing that needs to be called "dumb crap".
If you've ever been droned by 2 megathrons and a typhoon, you know just how handy a large smartbomb is. Also stops newbie raven pilots quick, and is handing for blowing up those oh so annoying pods without having to lock them.
And since bombs dont blow up cargo cans anymore, they are pretty damn smart.
