Finally got my skills and gear together and was able to launch my first couple of Discovery probes.
"Moon has no materials worth exploting"
Can I expect to find a lot of moon that just aren't worth a darn? I've only scanned 2 moons and both were the same. Nothing there, nobody home. Course I'll be out scanning more moons tonight after work but I'm just curious if it's normal to find nothing at all.

Yep it's quite normal, you will find a lot more with nothing than with something... Something worth is another question.
Like if you find 4 moons that have Atmospheric Gases in abondance 3, it can make you wonder the value of that stuff. |

you're gonna need to scan the entire system. Usually at least 40 moons. Most of the time you'll atmospheric gases, evaporite deposits, silicates, and hydrocarbons in abundance. Some of the time you'll find nothing at all. You'll find some moons with a metal on them (check item db for list). What you'll want to look for are moons with double metals or metals that are really rare. Basically you're looking for a needle in a hay stack. The best moons are in 0.0 space.

Having done about 250 scans I have found that approximately 50% of the time you will get the "Moon has no materials worth exploiting." About 12% of the moons had a rare mineral. I have found none with multiple rare minerals. :(

I've found a handful of moons with four different materials available to mine and a handful of moons with a material that has an abundance of 3.

I finally finished scanning one .3 sector that had 76+ moons in it. 3 of the moons have POS setup on them already by other corps. I would say 50% no material moons is about right. 12% moons with metals I can agree with as well as I'm sure the 3 taken moons were probibly the best of the best in the sector. I found a moon that I can mine 3 different gases (the blue icon ones) and run 3 different simple reactions. But I think I'm gonna go with a two station setup. First one will make sulferic acid as it seems there are more people wanting that than the other low grade simple reacions. Then I'll mine Tritanium at the same time. Second station will provide the other 2 gases and chromium. Hopefully this will result in sales that will at least pay for the station operations and provide the corp with reactors that we can use to make other complex reactions for purchases of stuff from the market. I would say there is at least 10 moons that a POS in sector could run on and make a simple reaction just from that single moon. Just wish I had found something a little better than tritian and chromium.
