My suggestion would be an unused object eg. secure can or ship decays over time.
So for example if somone does not use a secure can for a week it starts to decay gradually loosing hit points until it pops a week later. Lasting a total of two weeks if not used.
Obviously if you come back half way through its second week you can repair it and the timer resets.

Hey, just thought I would say that I support this idea lots.
Think of all the rows in your DB you could free up CCP :)
There are some ships and cans bbeen in my local system forever, nobody touches em and they destroy the beuatiful space CCP have created.

/signed! Can litter sucks... i go scouting once and a while for new off the road mining systems and hate comming to belts in .7 packed with them surrounding the entire belt.

Yeah damn right, I've been to some Caldari 0.7 today. Sucks for noobs like me. Can't hunt anything amongst all those cans. Ruins it. I fully support the idea for decaying over time.

If not decaying over time, let them 'open' over time, or, let them be 'fair targets' to be destroyed by gunfire - once again, over time.
Maybe we need a new skill 'sanitation engineering' and a new ship class 'garbage scow' heh.
I only have one littered can, just so you know, and I know exactly where it is :)

How about removing the anchor option on cans? Then after every down time they get removed.
If you really need a can in that area it doesnt take 2 minutes to pick it up before downtime and then redeploy it after.

I would LOVE for all unused ships/cans and so on to be removed. one week, two weeks, hell 4 weeks. There would still be a difference.
There are cannisters I have seen out there since cans was avaible. I thought Anchoring was avaible to make it possible to have a can avaible in space for a prolonged period of time, not for ever. And alot of cans out there are not even anchored they just last for ever anyway.
Either totaly remove all unused crap or simply script it ti the closes station placing it in the owners hanger, making it spam their assets instead of our space.

I love that. Move the cans to the nearest station and let them deal with their list of assets growing out of proportion. Some people are just plain dump... dropping containers in the middle of the out-dock, nothing more frustrating.
other possible solutions: -license to jettison around gates and stations (no license? sentry guns will take care of your drop) -decaying over time, mixed with the salvage drone that knows which ones are old and can pick them off

Yeah but people have a lot of isk invested in these cans. So i would like to see a system where if a can is not used to over 20% of its capacity it goes back to the owners hanger in 2 weeks.

I'm sure you guys has seen the someone spelled the word ION with cans, everytime i go into that system, i get lag when ever I look at it. It was alright at first but I think it should be removed now.

It's in either Nimambal or Mohas. I know it is in one of those for sure. Cause I always see it when I go from Ubtes to Radima.

 Yes! the can issue is a real problem. All unsecure cans should have the same pop timer.
I realize that some rich corps will then switch to using secure cans for their advertising efforts but I'm ok with that if there is a minimum distance established from stations & gates or the sentry guns will go active against the cans.
Too expensive for even the rich corps to litter these areas then. imho

I believe you should be able to shoot ANY abandon ship, without penalty regardless of system security. I went to empire the other day in Ourslaert and there was 10 abandon newb ships around 1 station!!! GAH!! I wanted to blow them up sooooo bad. I dont understand why people cant self-destruct them or just plain trash them!!!!! *sigh* I hate empire...so F***ing clutered...
