Pod and Planet Fiction Content
We've got some talented writers in EVE who deserve a good fiction contest and a place to post their works. And thanks to some outrageously generous sponsors, we've got a contest that should motivate people to stop messing around and get their stories written. Check out these prizes:
-An EVGA Superclocked GeForce GTX670 graphics card, courtesy of CCP. I'll let you look up the specs and value on that one yourself...!
-Two year-long subscriptions to EON, courtesy of EON magazine.
-An ISK prize pool totalling 20 billion, courtesy of Somer Blink and Eve Online Hold'Em. and
-Twelve months of PLEX, courtesy of EOH Tom. Not too bad, eh...? And in addition, very good entries may be considered for publication in EON.
OK, so the contest: There will be two categories. The main category is for works based on the New Eden lore and canon, similar to the EVE Chronicles stories. Works in this category should be faithful to he EVE canon and shouldn't mention actual in-game player characters, corps or alliances. No doubt we'll get some amazingly imaginative and well-crafted stories here.
The second category is for works about actual in-game player characters or in-game happenings. If you want to write a story about your corp and its members, a stroke of pvp tactical brilliance, a corp infiltration, a hulkageddon encounter, etc., it should go here. Have fun and tell your true, partly-true, or entirely made-up tales from the world of EVE.
More detailed guidelines for each category are on the contest page.
Word count for entries is 1,400-5,000 words. The contest will run until December 2, 2012, then judging will be by CCP Eterne, CCP Falcon, and myself. Please see the contest page for the rules, how to submit your work, and the list of prizes for each category. Any questions, just post them in this thread or EVE mail me.
Good luck writers! Get on it! |

I was wondering if my story series would count. I wrote a series for Eve-Pirate awhile ago, fiction, set in the Eve Universe, but it was silly and definatly not canon. Would this be acceptable to enter? |

Big win to CCP and the EON guys. This is a great contest and I can't wait to see the submissions.
Will we get to see at least the runners up as well as the winners? Or perhaps all of the submissions? What can I say, I'm a sucker for great stories.

Don't see why you can't accept a piece of work I did awhile ago. Sorry mate. The reasons for this: -Works might be considered for publication in EON, and EON prefers new, unpublished works. -There's a lot of fan fiction out there, and the contest prizes are pretty big. We can't open the doors to the whole past body of work of EVE fan fiction. And picking some arbitrary cut-off date in the past would be messy. It would be good for some people, but bad for others. In other words, arbitrary, and not really fair. -The idea is to encourage people to write new stuff. |

Since we are allowed to submit multiple entries, I was wondering if it'd be okay to submit a two-part story (-ish)? And by that, I don't mean a way of getting around the strict word-limit, but more of, say, a story about whatever, and then a "follow-up" story that, in example, explains and follows the events strictly following the previous story? Or should each entry be ("strictly") disjunct - as in, not referring to each other?
In case the above was unclear, three examples: 1) Story A takes place YC 50 and story B in YC 110. B starts out by explaining the outlines of A, and has a subject of the effects of A. 2) Story A is about a person in YC 110-115, and story B is about the same person, in YC 120. 3) Story A is about a person in YC 50, and story B is about this persons now-grown son in YC 110. Again, there might be overlaps (such as, if, in story A, the person has a mighty battle or similar which might make the deed known (locally or throughout New Eden)). Are either allowed?
Is it okay if story B does not refer to things that a reader might not know (provided the reader hasn't read story A beforehand)?
Maybe I'm jumping the horse, since B might not have enough words for recaps. Better safe than sorry, though. (And while it might be better to ask forgiveness than permission, I'm a stickler for contest rules)
As a side note, I find it both hilarious and ingenious that the contest spans november, at the same time as NaNoWriMo. Aand a follow-up question: If the story submitted to this contest is 1/10th of the story submitted to NaNoWriMo, does this violate the contest rules (NaNoWriMo does not, if I recall correctly, publish the novel)? |

Aand a follow-up question: If the story submitted to this contest is 1/10th of the story submitted to NaNoWriMo, does this violate the contest rules (NaNoWriMo does not, if I recall correctly, publish the novel)? First part of your question: Yes, a series of stories is OK. For judging purposes, each one will have to stand independently on its own, in isolation. As if the story were being submitted to a magazine, and the readers are not familiar with the characters or the previous events. (Tough challenge, eh? But the old Sherlock Holmes, H.P. Lovecraft, Conan and Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser stories managed to do it, and yet have some degree of continuity).
Second part of your question: To be considered in the competition, the story shouldn't have been published anywhere. If it won't appear on a NaNoWriMo site or any other site during the contest, it should be OK. If it is published (posted) somewhere else during the contest, we can't consider it as a competition entry. We're trying to keep things simple for Zapatero at EON, who may be considering good entries for publication. Publishing/posting somewhere else makes that complicated. |

On the 5000 word limit everyone is asking about...
There are a few reasons for this: 1) Most of the official EVE Chronicles are no longer than this. A cursory glance at some of the longest found them to average around 3500-4000 for a single chron. 2) EON has limited space to publish fiction. 5000 words is actually rather long for them, most stories in there tend to be 3000 words or so. 3) Falcon and I have volunteered to judge this in addition to our regular work, which means we'll likely be reading a good number of them during our off hours. We expect a fairly hefty response to this contest, so significantly upping the number of words means it'll take us longer to read everything and thus longer to judge things.
Though I heartily recommend trying to work around the 3000-5000 word mark for short fiction. It's a nice, solid length for both retaining interest and keeping the story moving and punchy. I've written more short stories than I can count and it's helped me tremendously in my longer form work. CCP Eterne | Community Representative

It's pretty simple. If you win, why would they want to publish and already published piece in EON magazine? Yep, that would count as 'published.' I've added a short wall of text (the stubbiest one possible) to the contest page to the clarify that entries should be brand-new works. But send a link to your older stories, if you want to share them as non-competition stories for the 'reading library.' And crank out a new story for the competition-- you still have 5 weeks. |

It's also much easier to tell if the story is truly an original; with the (relative) anonymity of the EVE Online in particular, and the Web in general, it would be far too easy to lift an already-published work from another website. If that work happened to win a prize, the entrant would have ripped off someone else's work for a prize that he hadn't earned. |

Precisely: the post is attributed to your character name. That doesn't stop someone from taking a story from elsewhere on the Web and posting it as their own work.
Case in point: Many high schools keep a very close eye on certqain commonly-used websites, because dishonest students will often lift poetry, essays or entire term papers wholesale from the Web and hand them in as assignments.
Besides, don't be lazy! Show us your best work, not your past work!

Hello, a rules change that may benefit some writers:
In the category for stories about players/in-game events, the word count for stories is now 600-5,000 words. This allows submission of shorter works. (A minimum of 600 words instead of 1,400). Works in this category won't be considered for publication in EON, so there's no reason for them to have fit minimum word count guidelines.

In terms of profanity, it's been used in moderation in both official EVE Chronicles as well as in EON submissions and Live Events.
It's not an issue, so long as it's used in moderation and is not out of place.
Use of profanity can add a lot of depth to a character if it's used wisely and sparingly, and can also be used to convey a solid feeling of tension.
I don't think it's too much of an issue so long as it's sparingly used and meets the situation well.

OK, we've hit the end of the entry submissions period. Well done everybody. A total of exactly 100 original, new works came in from the writers of the EVE community. Not bad by anybody's standard, I'd say. 43 of those came in during the last two days before the contest deadline. That's about 20/day in the last two days, compared to about 1.5/day in the first 37 days of the contest. Once again, a fine writing tradition or procrastination/deadline-crunching was followed!
If you entered the contest, please: -Make sure your entry is on the Contest Entries & Reading Bank page. If it's not there, it's not accessible to the judges. -Make sure the entry is in the category you wanted (8,000 Suns or A Day in the Life). -Make sure the page's hyperlink to your entry is working properly.
OK, so about the judging: Please watch here or on the contest blog page for an estimate when we'll be done. We just received about 340 pages of new entries for the judges to start reading. We're all doing this in our after-work hours, so that will take some time. But we're aiming for announcing contest results as soon as we can. We'll give an update on when we expect to be done in a day or two.
o7 all, well done! |

From the stories that I've had the privilege of reading, they all have something worth mentioning.
I have a question about the judging though:
As far as determining an overall winner, how far does adhering to Eve Lore and Cannon go?
I've read some entries that merely toss the name of an NPC into their story and call it good so that they can be considered for the grand prize, then I've seen others that take a significant event of EVE's Lore and Cannon history and bring it alive with their submission. While still good stories, it's evident that some of the them don't have any real connection to any of the rich content we have in such abundance.
Thank you for everyone involved, the amount of fiction received should give anyone a good run for their money. I wish everyone the best of luck. |

Thank you for everyone involved, the amount of fiction received should give anyone a good run for their money. I wish everyone the best of luck. The rules for the 8,000 Suns category follow Zapatero's guidelines for EON submissions. Basically, the story should fit into the New Eden world, as laid out by the canon. The rules don't say that points will be added for expert use of the canon.
But, that said... If incorporating content from the lore makes the story "better" (more interesting, intriguing, thought provoking, etc.), then that will naturally count in the judging. In other words, a story might be based on a theme or event from the lore. That theme or event is already very interesting. By taking advantage of that already-interesting content and building on it, the story might end up with more richness and impact than it would have otherwise. So though points aren't specifically added for incorporating the lore, taking advantage of the lore could make the story a stronger, more interesting entry. Or not-- it depends on the story.
Personally the judging criteria I'll be using is whether an entry is a "good story, with good ideas, told well." (Not necessarily told with perfect English grammar, but told well). |

I think i see what he is getting at. Your givin away a graphix card and other prizes for adhering to the eve cannon because it is more so difficult to writer for, but some of these entries look like they are wrote for a "day in the life" then changing their in game characters name to an NPCs name so that they could be in the running for that "harder" prize. But hey, if that's all it takes to make your story within the eve lore, go for it I say :) |

We're going as fast as we can! Just be glad we're all managing to read an average of 3-4 stories per day, and not just one. If one per day, results would be announced in mid-March. |

But hey, if that's all it takes to make your story within the eve lore, go for it I say :) In the end, I suppose it's kind of a PVP-like decision: How will your story with minimal lore content fare in battle against all the others in the lore-based category? That may or may not take advantage of good ideas from the canon? Or should you play it more conservatively, and enter your story in the A Day in the Life category? To win, your story has to be the best in the category, however that's achieved.
But again, just to clarify to everyone: The rules of the 8,000 Suns category didn't say that a story has to be lore-intensive to win. They just follow Zapatero's guidelines for EON submissions-- fit into the New Eden world, no egregious violations of the lore, no mentioning player entities. It's more of a "thou shalt not" rule than a "thou shalt" rule. |

While you're waiting for judging results, maybe you'd like to check out your colleagues' work in the Reading Bank. All kinds of stuff there, by writers who were at it long before this contest was even a twinkle in the EVE fiction community's eye. Series with continuity of characters and events, from episode to episode. Longer works and free-er works, made minus any restrictions whatsoever. Check out the ideas and leave some honest comments for your colleagues. Even if you hold their feet to the fire, they'll appreciate that somebody read and dialogued with them. |
