The contest rules say "must be 1400-1500 words." Does this mean "no more than"? Or "no more than and no less than"? Silly question, but I just want to confirm.

Sorry, the entry needs to be a new work. It could be another story in your series, though.
By the way, if the new story is non-canon, there's a category for that.

so there is no violating the canon, but what about things the canon doesn't tell us much or anything about? what about things involving the more mysterious aspects of the fiction? could we "fill in the gaps" per say? i was thinking about writing about the Feythabolis, which is some thing we know almost nothing about.

i was writing an entire book on Faction warfare. I don't suppose fiction based on fiction (which could seem timeless) would be accepted?

Since we are allowed to submit multiple entries, I was wondering if it'd be okay to submit a two-part story (-ish)?
And by that, I don't mean a way of getting around the strict word-limit, but more of, say, a story about whatever, and then a "follow-up" story that, in example, explains and follows the events strictly following the previous story?
Or should each entry be ("strictly") disjunct - as in, not referring to each other?

In case the above was unclear, three examples:
1) Story A takes place YC 50 and story B in YC 110. B starts out by explaining the outlines of A, and has a subject of the effects of A.
2) Story A is about a person in YC 110-115, and story B is about the same person, in YC 120.
3) Story A is about a person in YC 50, and story B is about this persons now-grown son in YC 110. Again, there might be overlaps (such as, if, in story A, the person has a mighty battle or similar which might make the deed known (locally or throughout New Eden)).
Are either allowed?

Is it okay if story B does not refer to things that a reader might not know (provided the reader hasn't read story A beforehand)?

Maybe I'm jumping the horse, since B might not have enough words for recaps. Better safe than sorry, though. (And while it might be better to ask forgiveness than permission, I'm a stickler for contest rules)

As a side note, I find it both hilarious and ingenious that the contest spans november, at the same time as NaNoWriMo.
Aand a follow-up question: If the story submitted to this contest is 1/10th of the story submitted to NaNoWriMo, does this violate the contest rules (NaNoWriMo does not, if I recall correctly, publish the novel)?

Ok, so i read the pages concerning this and I am a wee-bit confused. The eve official lore part is what is confusing me. Is there a specific topic in eve or can we make up any fictional story to be considered for the graphics card contest.

Only 5000 words??? Eek...that's one hell of a challenge.

I think this is a fantastic idea and I'm eager to try my hand at writing proper Eve fiction instead of shoehorning a few blurbs into blog posts, lol.

Is there a maximum submission point?
Do I need to be absolutely cannon? Because EVE Lore has much that isn't discussed in detail.
I already have an eve-online crossover fanfiction published on the internet at this time. The characters in the story aren't human. Would my story not be considered if a different version of it is uploaded somewhere else?

mmmh so hang on. do they define published as in a magazine... or published as in on a website etc? eg my stories are up on fanfiction. are they counting this as published or not?

A good story is still a good story, even if the grammar isn't perfect. Spell check can take care of the spelling for you. Same for people who don't speak English as a first language-- don't be shy.

It's pretty simple. If you win, why would they want to publish and already published piece in EON magazine? Look at it from their perspective...they don't want some other publication/websites sloppy seconds.

It's also much easier to tell if the story is truly an original; with the (relative) anonymity of the EVE Online in particular, and the Web in general, it would be far too easy to lift an already-published work from another website. If that work happened to win a prize, the entrant would have ripped off someone else's work for a prize that he hadn't earned.

This is a great contest and IGÇÖve enjoyed reading a few of the submissions so far. IGÇÖm thinking of entering (yeah, I know, only a week to go) but I do have a question on the eligibility of my submission...

A few years ago I sent a draft of the first part of a story to (ex-CCP) Zapatero for a bit of a review. I had a few comments back but never got round to acting on these or finishing the story (until today). The story has not been published anywhere (online or off), but would my contact with Zapatero disqualify my entry?

When *exactly* is the deadline? The intro says it runs to Dec 2nd... Does that mean entries must be submitted by the end of the 2nd (i.e. end of today)? If so, what timezone? Just trying to work out how many hours I have left.

From the stories that I've had the privilege of reading, they all have something worth mentioning.

I've read some entries that merely toss the name of an NPC into their story and call it good so that they can be considered for the grand prize, then I've seen others that take a significant event of EVE's Lore and Cannon history and bring it alive with their submission. While still good stories, it's evident that some of the them don't have any real connection to any of the rich content we have in such abundance.

Thank you for everyone involved, the amount of fiction received should give anyone a good run for their money. I wish everyone the best of luck.

The rules for the 8,000 Suns category follow Zapatero's guidelines for EON submissions. Basically, the story should fit into the New Eden world, as laid out by the canon. The rules don't say that points will be added for expert use of the canon.

But, that said... If incorporating content from the lore makes the story "better" (more interesting, intriguing, thought provoking, etc.), then that will naturally count in the judging. In other words, a story might be based on a theme or event from the lore. That theme or event is already very interesting. By taking advantage of that already-interesting content and building on it, the story might end up with more richness and impact than it would have otherwise. So though points aren't specifically added for incorporating the lore, taking advantage of the lore could make the story a stronger entry. Or not-- it depends on the story.

Personally the judging criteria I'll be using is whether an entry is a "good story, with good ideas, told well." (Not necessarily told with perfect English grammar, but told well).

I'd be lying if I said I didn't check this page on a daily basis for updates!

I think i see what he is getting at. Your givin away a graphix card and other prizes for adhering to the eve cannon because it is more so difficult to writer for, but some of these entries look like they are wrote for a "day in the life" then changing their in game characters name to an NPCs name so that they could be in the running for that "harder" prize. But hey, if that's all it takes to make your story within the eve lore, go for it I say :)
