Greenwitch Mean Time (sp on greenwitch?) is not the same as standard british time. GMT doesn't use daylight saving changes, while almost every national/regional time do. GMT is just hardcore sun dial time at a given reference point on the globe. --

The UK is now in BST (British Summertime) so you are either BST +1 or GMT +2 but i'm not an expert.

The given point being Greenwich, UK :)
As for "GMT doesn't use daylight savings" - nor does BST. No timezone ever enters daylight savings. Instead some geographical locations choose to adopt a different timezone at certain times of the year. As of Easter weekend the UK has adopted BST and it won't go back to GMT until October. Neither BST or GMT has changed and nor will they ever. It's us who choose whether to set our clocks by GMT or BST.
Actually I don't think there is such a thing as BST outside of the UK. Officially we're on GMT+1 but everyone in the UK knows what means. The only uncertainty is why we use the word 'summer'
Also from a technical point of view the Eve servers will be running on UTC it's just that UTC is the same as GMT for most purposes and more people know what GMT means. -- (Battle hardened miner)

What would be useful though is if the EVE client displayed local time as well as GMT.

Why?
I really don't see the point in having a client that is being used to interact with people from all over the globe displaying the local time. If time is important for coordinating activities then it needs to be the same time for everyone.
If you want to know the local time look at your watch, or a clock on the wall. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Precisely because it is used all over the world and could display the local time in each of those locations. That's the time that means something to those people. E.g. OMG it's 4am again, time for bed!
I don't wear a watch, don't have a clock on the wall, so I depend on my computer when I want to know the time. I run EVE in fullscreen mode so can't see the windows clock. It's a pain to have to convert from GMT.
Hope that answers the question "why?". One for you: why not?

So buy a clock - they are cheap enough. Heck most domestic equipment seems to come with a clock these days anyway. Telephones, hifis, microwaves they've all got the damn things.
As to why not:The number of people playing Eve that don't have access to a clock is going to be very small. Any such local time clock in Eve has to have an option to hide it to avoid confusion. That means taking the devs away from other tasks in order to implement something that 95% of the user base don't need and that the other 5% can address by spending a few quid down the local supermarket.
Clocks are not expensive and they have the advantage of not requiring you to run your noisy, power consuming, hitech computer 24 hours a day. -- (Battle hardened miner)
