Edited by: Diziet DeWar on 08/04/2005 06:18:07 I know you have all read these bits a lot in the forums, but I needed to vent and also explain how this particular scam story may be an important note to all pilots.
A few weeks back another player took me for a ride that left me dirt poor. Some double dealing on his part and a whole lot of foolishness on my part. But thatÆs how a good con works: get the markÆs trust so that when you ask for something out of the ordinary they will succumb without a second thought.
The con pilot, who will be referred to as ôLowjackö for this story, seemed like a decent enough fellow. Invited me into his Corporation a few months back when I just joined Eve. Along with some other recruits he was very helpful and fun to chat with while pursuing fame and riches in the universe. He provided capital when I needed to make some large trade deals in my Industrial û as it was my chosen means to earn hard ISK. He also was there when I needed help in getting through ambitious agent missions. As the other recruits slowly dropped off to join larger corporations, I decided to stick around. I figured I would rather have my own corporation one day than be a tool for a larger outfit. In fact, ôLowjackö and I hit it off well and he made me Director. In effect, it was our intention to build the corporation up together at a later time when we had the skills and financial backing to do so. Some recent recruits, that were friends of mine just joining the game also had recently joined the game which provided for some new enthusiasm
So, things were going pretty good when ôLowjackö hits me with ôThe Dealö. Basically, he indicates that another player is leaving the game and if he can scrape up enough ISK he claims that he can buy his assets off escrow for a rather hansom profit. I wonÆt bother with telling you how silly this may sound if you were thinking straight. At the time, though, I thought nothing of it and pledged what I could afford to donate. A day or two later I was able to make just over 200 million available to him by liquidating some of my larger assets. I did maintain a corporate office in my home system and kept another 100-150 million in assets in the hangers as fall back in case things went sour and also to provide our new corp mates with some goodies.
Next, I left town for a few days on a business trip with the intention of coming back to a nice return on my investment. When I returned though, not only did I find that my corporate hangars had been cleaned out, but ôLowjackö was unreachable. In fact, the only response was his resigning from our corp as CEO and messaging me that the new owner had bought his character recently from another player. So, not only was I conned, but now I was unable to seek vengeance. I also learn through mutual contacts, that he had scammed other players out of much more than he took me for.
Oh well, I figured. Lesson learned. ItÆs what I get for being foolish. I spent the following week running Electronic Parts in the only ship I had left, my trusty Iteron. I was running trade like a madman determined to get myself back into financial stability and a suitable ship. Out of the blue, ôLowjackö contacts me in RL. !!! Ahhah! I played it cool and let him know that I wasnÆt too bitter. I figure he was just playing the game, no hard feelings and all. He tells me he got banned from the game for his exploits, as it seems his treachery spanned many players and corps of which I can only guess. All I can say is that in the end he claimed to have around 18 billion. Though I was happy to hear he was punished, it did seem to me to be a bit of an over reaction on CCPÆs part, but I figured I was not privy to the whole story. He also indicated he felt sorry for ripping me off and was going to pay me back through another character in-game. Right on! I thought, there is justice in the world. Surely enough, a few hours later a character wired me 400 million in ISK. I went to sleep that night happy knowing that 3 months of game-play was back in my wallet.
The final blow. I login the following evening to find a GM has deducted the 400 million from my wallet. No explanation, nothing. So, not only did I get scammed by my corp mate, but missed out on getting it back as well. Oh well. Good luck out there. DonÆt trust anyone.
By-the-way: love this game - its awesome.

Rawne - Thanks for the tip. Wasn't my intention to break any forum rules. In the big picture, it was not important to the story anyway.

AFAIK, you can say what they did in a general way, you just cant post in any actual communications from them.

Why the HELL did the GM do that?Thats a normal transaction.Someone sends you money and out of the blue a GM removes it?
Next time you buy something from a player.....who knows......it might get cancelled too.

The isk was most probably obtained through an exploit of some sort. If a character who was just banned for some sort of exploit sent a large sum of isk to another character, I'd imagine that CCP would want it back.
Be glad CCP isnt SoE or you'd have been hit with a banstick for 'accepting' duped isk.

Ha! Well, considering I'm the one who got "duped" - it would be ironic to get banned for accepting my own ISK back.

On the other hand, maybe the character who wired you the isk is a known eBay seller. Perhaps that was the purpose of the scam to begin with?
But at the end of the day, who can say? Good story, and shows you need to be on your toes when making 'friends' in EVE. It's probably the main reason I fly solo most of the time.

I haven't talked to a GM about it, but scams are usually considered legal. Which means your friend probably did some exploiting as well, which isn't legal. If the ISK was obtained through an exploit I think they would remove it.

Nice try Diziet. You still have some good old fashion Eve justice heading your way for trying to scam me.
I'm really surprised that you didn't get banned for exploiting the character transfer procedure.
BTW, 300 million was removed directly from your corp's wallet.

it's dammed aggrivating when a GM pulls a "GOD Move" on you with no explination. and they don't allow discussion on the forums. It's like being in a dictatorship run state. We need an external forum to discuss GM boning of players to see if there is a trend and take the issue up with CCP management.

BTW, your corp name, EthicsGradient, is a great name for a scamming corp. It clearly defines the purpose of your corp and makes your lame story even less believable.

You know what is truly aggrivating, people buying into anything that they read on internet forums as gods own gospel, cause why would they lie, would be truly unheard of lying on a online forum...
And public discussions without having all the facts... if you got a issue with CCP personally that's where you take it up with. And that's for you and them to work out, not for other customers to discuss without having all the facts, and jumping to insane conclusions like you are willing to do. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Fine.. then let them do so WITH all the facts, if the customer wishes a public discussion of what they felt was a bad GM decision let them clear the air. Not run a CIA level coverup, and THAT you silly NubMonkey was the reason for my post. Not to whine.. NOT to agree without knowing the facts (perhaps you should read your OWN post .. hmmmm?)

This was a very amusing thread, I started reading here and I must say Diziet sounds plausable, if true I doubt the person "Lowjack" was actually the player that did the scamming.
Thus far it was just a sad "I got ripped off" story, the interesting thing comes when we get to see the other posts.
As for Diziet being the scammer trying to cover his tracks: Possible but he would have to hold 2 accounts with no link between them, if CCP was hunting an exploiter they would have no problem spotting 2 accounts that have obvious links (such as payed for by the same person or by checking the timecard numbers). While it is possible to hide ownership from CCP it does demands effort.
Once I had read all the posts I can only say its been an amusing read and as for who is the scammer/exploiter and so on... I have no Idea and I doubt I will ever find out :)

Wow, this is all very interesting and yes the other posts mentioned in this thread are related to my story. I'm actually a bit confused about all this and have taken the matter up with CCP through a petition. I can assure you Diziet DeWar is on the up-and-up. I'm glad I posted as I would have not known about the other posts regarding this matter and the individuals involved.
By-the-way. EthicsGradient was taken from one of my favorite scifi novels by Iain Banks. Even the name Diziet DeWar is too.

This is really what my post was about. Just sharing my story so that others may be more careful. Can really only blame myself for being so nieve.
I also, don't have any resentments toward any GM's or CCP as I'm sure they are just trying to sort it all out as well and make sure no one is being taken advantage of by exploiting the game. |
