astrometrics 2 (takes like, an hour tops i think) and a t1 scanning frig.
that's what i was using in null to scan down my grav sites. Reading my posts is like panning for gold; most it will be useless, but occasionally you'll find a nugget of gold. |

If you just want scanning and not actually running the sites, I vote highly for the Imicus: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Imicus
Reason being is the 2/2/2 slot layout lets you equip the probe launcher, salvager, analyzer, and codebreaker in the high/med slots, and then you can fit a small rep and plate or other defense in the low slots. And you can fit an AB in one of the med slots if you drop one of the other modules.
No guns? No problem. The Imicus is the only T1 scanning frigate that can have 3 light drones out :) Obviously you won't be able to run really big sites with it, but for small stuff it's manageable if you have the AB on and just speed tank while the drones handle the rats (as I said though, not advisable for the larger or low/nullsec sites).
It also makes a great ninja salvager if you like doing that
The other bonus here is that it takes maybe 2 days tops to fully train it to use all that stuff and the Astrometics skills that you need.
For skills, I'd say you need:
Astrometrics III (lets you have 5 probes out. Supposedly you can scan down sites with 4 probes, but I never had much luck doing it) The scanning skills that reduce the scan time get that to 4 so it only takes 6 seconds per scan), and the skills that improve the accuracy of the probes.
Train those skills up to 3 or 4, and then stick on 2 Gravity rigs or whatever it's called that improves scan probe strength by 10% each and you are good to go. |

What the last poster said - good advice.
Just one small thing - mostly all scan frigs will be getting 3 drones in the up coming Winter Expansion (more here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=143584&find=unread) |

The advice posted so far is good for getting into basic scanning. But for a serious explorer I would recommend getting skills to 5/4/4/4 as soon as possible. Astrometrics 5 also lets you use the Deep space probe with can scan 250 AU to scan an entire system in one shot.
There are several ships both T1 and T2 that give bonuses to probe scan strength. I fly a Cheetah myself, but all the T2 cov-ops give 10% scanning bonuses. Scan strength is the most important for finding the hard to find sites. There is a lot of competition in high sec for exploration sites. If you get high enough scanning strength, you will find sites that lower skilled players will miss. Any sig that your scan detects I believe below 0.09% will not show up on the scan. So unless you get lucky and have a probe within 4 AU of the sig the smallest sig sites will not show up on your list on your first sweep.
There are several implants which can help with scanning. These can be used for those extra few points of scan strength, to fill a hole where your skills are still low, or to just speed up your overall scan times. Scanning time is only crucial when scanning down PVP targets with combat probes, any thing else you will still find it, just might take a few seconds longer. If you want to keep a clone loaded with implants for scanning, by all means do. But other wise, if you have good skills and the right ship you don't really need implants. They are nice to have though.
Next is equipment. you can add a lot to your scanning by using sisters launchers and probes. They are more expensive, but If you are careful it can be a one time investment. These also can make up for lower scanning skills.
There are also some really good scanning tutorials on you tube if you need some help with the actual process. Seeing it in a video helps a lot more than just reading a guide. |

Plus they can fit Covert and Nullifier subsystems.
The others are far less expensive though, but getting the 50% bonus on a Covert Ops is probably less useful skill-wise as getting it on T3 (about 5 days of general training for T3 vs. about 17 days of specialized training for T2). |
