Hello im new to EVE, and have just had a pretty bad expirience.
I was in my "Merlin" and had just come out of warp, and was approching a stargate in and 0.4 protected zone. there was a pirate in a Interceptor waiting at the stargate. before i knew anything he destroyed my ship (in 1 shot) WTF!!!
How can i protect myself from this in the future, i mean 1 shot FFS. i though the merlin was tough enough to atleast survive 1 shot.
PS: i had small shield booster.
why did my ship blow up after 1 shot?

Edited by: Khrystoff on 11/04/2005 17:38:40 it all comes down to skills, and the calibur of equipment they allow you to use
A merlin is an excellent frigate, but it's just that, a tech 1 frigate. There's not a tech 1 frigate out there that would've faired any better. And destroyers aren't much better than frigates are. Just take your time, you can't rush this and expect to be invincible for several motnhs yet
move fast, hit hard, it's what interceptors do. The only way to avoid this while training and saving up for the good equipment is to know your limits and make sure your ship is insured just in case your wrong about what your limits are.

Edited by: Rogue Fox on 11/04/2005 18:19:27 Just so i know.
What weapon could have cause instant destruction to my ship, what do you think he used.?
also would a cloaking device have saved my bacon, or armor/shield upgrades.?

the unfortunate fact is that there's nothing that could have stopped your destruction. his ship far (far) outclassed your own.
Frigates don't have the stats to allow for massive shield or armor upgrades, and only mount small weaponry.
The interceptor most likely had several turrets of powerful-small or medium size and the pilots skills further increased his damage output.
Just stay safe for now, and train towards a powerful ship of your own.
The cloaking device wouldn't have done anything unless you knew he was going to be there, and cloaked before he saw you.
just be patient, you'll get to his level eventually. until then insure everything

Originally by: Rogue Fox How can i protect myself from this in the future, i mean 1 shot FFS.
also though, there are the general rules for staying safe(r) in 0.4 and below.
Check your map before you set out for recent ship and pod kills to see if a system is likely to be dangerous
Watch the local channel - there may be chatter if someone's ganking at a gate.
Set up a good bookmark to warp right in on the gate so they don't get the chance to even get one shot off (also instas really wind up the pirates )
If you don't want to use instas, you could train the skills for microwarp drives instead. Evasive maneuvring is nice to have also.

I doubt it was actually one shot, but you'll learn that the bars for the shields, armor and structure are sort of delayed. As he was in an Interceptor, he probably had fast guns and high skill levels that allowed him to shred your ship so fast and steadily you couldn't detect any distinct hits.
The solution to your problems : stay above 0.4 for at least another month.

It was a Heavy beam lazer, i belive he was in an interceptor well it looked like an interceptor, i only caught a quick look.
Atm im busy training up.
My objective is to buy a ship thats kinda small but can defend its self. i want to be a pirate or a mercinary. yohoho
The two craft that appeal to me are the Assault ships "harpy" & the "hawk" but maby an interceptor would be better i dont know ??, i still have a long way to go.

Get your chosen frigate skill to level 5. That's the key.
Interceptors are VERY fast, and can hit surprisingly hard. Handy for outrunning those pesky torpedoes and drones. Watch for cruise missiles though.
Assault frigates are pretty sluggish, but deal almost cruiser-style damage, and are extremely tough (An Enyo is comfortably capable of tanking 2-3 cruisers for example).

hmm if he was using Heavy lasers i boubt it was an interceptor. Thats a cruiser class weapon as far as i know. The kill mail will tell you what he was flying.
But yes T1 frigates are not tough, all PvP orientated people will tell you that they are "throw away tacklers" ie they are not expected to survive the encounter (if they do its a bonus, they can tackle again faster! )
Ints and Assault frigs are quite different
Ints rely on speed to survive, tanking them is difficult. They can also do a nice ammount of damage (not quite figured out the rational behind that :P) Taranis (gallente) is one of the most feared interceptors out there (although beware of the crow (caldari)).
Assault frigates however are totally different, they dont move as fast due to large mass, but they have defensive capabilities higher than most T1 cruisers. Their firepower is also high, able to kill (pretty much) T1 frigates in one barrage. I like the Harpy (Caldari) to use over the Hawk, I find its bonuses are nicer to use. Although I've heard good things of the Enyo (Gallente) I'm yet to get round to buying one.
of course the Assault frigs are a stepping stone to Heavy assault ships - which rock btw :).

It wasn't an interceptor. Nobody ganks in interceptors.
It was probably a battle cruiser like a Prophecy. You would be a moth in a bug zapper to a ship like that. Once again your kill mail will tell you the ship type.
In cases like this you should copy and paste the kill mail into your post so we can "scutinize the entrails".
Survival tips:
1) if you approach a gate into a .4 system and there is an alt sitting idly outside the gate it's not safe to go in there
2) if a .4 system has a pod kill in the last hour it's not safe
3) if you enter .4 system and see criminals on local its a bad idea to make an approach on another gate; instead go to a nearby moon of the gate in question and scan to see if a ship is there first

Only thing that could definitely save you is an insta bookmark. Not being there in the first place helps. Plan your route and be careful. Ignore the stay out of low sec warning. Losses now are easy to recover from and you learn a lot. If you're in a good corp, you should be able to go through a frigate per day, they may take the mickey but it shouldn't be an issue. Obviously only risk what you can afford to lose.
Our guys are reporting hits of over 2000 from one tech 2 gun, which is a merlin in one shot. Speed will help but you need to be at an angle to your target, there by increasing transversal velocity. Which can be displayed on your overview. If you approach a gate a pirate will usually be aligned with your direction of travel which means regardless of how fast you're going the transversal velocity is nearly 0. Of course travelling fast enough so he cannot lock you before you jump is a good idea. A good tip is to have a travelling set up and weapons in your cargo. Get to your destination find a station and change set up.
Be aware MWDs make you easier to hit as they increase signal radius and reduce shields. But if you're gone before they lock then you're safe. Gate gankers usually equip for fast lock times though. Target painters are now out which make you easier to hit, there is a stack bug as well at the moment on those.
The idea behind frigates is to get in close and fast so the big guns can't track you. However, when travelling to gates, the rat chooses the scenario. So you need to get the %*^& out of dodge.
Final tip, if you don't have an insta and are a little slow and you see the blinking red square and you are still kms of the gate be somewhere else quick. Frigates align well so fly to a moon or planet, make a safe spot and decide what to do next. Keep an eye on the scanner when in a safe spot, if they have probes you will see them when they get close.
This is a lot for a new guy to take in but if you look around these forums you can flesh out what I've said or post for the bits you don't get.
If you're feeling lucky and have the skill you could try to EW the guy. With one module you could save your neck. He has to be in range but you can take a chance on jamming him, reducing his range or screw the tracking on his guns. But its all chance based now so its a fingers crossed approach. If you're looking into PvP EW skills are good for a new friagte pilot to have. Check the ships and mod forums for detail.
