Greetings everyone.
I am a returning player. To make a long story short, I was in a 6 jumps journey to Jita, "knowingly" ingnoring the "don't fly what you can't lose" rule, when I got ganked 4 jumps away from my destination. Lost 500mil. Hurt like a *****, threw me away from the game for the better part of 3 months. I'm not complaining, it was probably my fault anyways. But now my wounds have healed and I'm back.
And one of the first things I noticed, is that the cargo hold of my Hulk shrank from 8000 to 350 m3.
My question is: Is solo mining still doable / worth? Between having to jetcan mine, or having to mine only in a group, or having to run from and to the station all the time, and having to endure the gankings... what the hell.. is it still woth?
Some times I wonder if now, that I'm back, I shouldn't be training my PVP skill instead...
Thanks to you all and fly safe.

last patch they changed the roles and stats of all the mining barges and exhumers. All mining ships have had their cargo bays reduced, however they have new ore holds which vary by ship. in addition, all mining ships have or get bonuses equal to three strip miners. Hulks and coveters reap the highest yield, with a modest ore hold (8k i believe); macks and retrievers have the largest ore hold (35k i believe); skiffs and procurers have the best tank (think battleship stats).
edit: so if you're looking to solo mine, a retreiver or mack is the way to go. more ore and less travel. |

Solo mining is never worth it, unless you're afk mining. Just don't tell James315.
But seriously, if you're only playing with one account, you're way better off doing missions, or FW, or trading, or anything instead of shooting rocks. |

Thanks for the replies, guys.
Didn't noticed the ore holds. Gonna have to look into it later. And I guess I should be looking for a corp.

It really depends on what your time is worth, what you enjoy doing and what you're capable of skill point wise.
Retrievers and Mackinaws have increased ore holds, which allow you to mine and not need to jetcan or depend on a hauling alt. These ships are specifically made for solo miners (or afk mining).
With a retriever you can make around 19M isk/hour with descent skills and mining drones II. Total ship/fitting cost will be under 50M isk.
A mackinaw will yield you an additional 1M - 1.5M isk/hour, but will also cost you 190M isk, and also makes you a target for ganking attempts, while the retriever isn't worth ganking.
Not knowing what your skills are like mining could be more profitable for you then running missions / sites. L4 security missions can pay out well, but requires a big investment in ship/mods and SP. Same thing with running sites and what not.
Basically if you're stil low in SP, don't have much isk to invest and want to do easy isk/hour that requires little work mining might be the best thing for you. |

Damnations are not mining vessels and don't have an ore hold.
Otherwise check the damm replies to see if anyone already made that suggestion. |

I know the biggest benefit of a mackinaw is the larger ore hold, but shouldn't it outpace the Ret's yield by more then 80m3 yield for a ship that take nearly a month longer and several times the price of a ret? |

Welcome back to Eve :)
Mining barges got the changes listed by other people, but something else you should be warned about with mining now is that there are a lot of players bumping miners around. Basically they fit a Stabber or other faster cruiser with a MWD and approach your barge at full speed. The force of the impact knocks your barge 20-30km away from the roid, which deactivates your mining lasers since they are out of range.
This apparently isn't an exploit, but it's annoying as hell.
Supposedly your can mostly negate the bumpers if you orbit the roid you are mining instead of sitting still, but that ruins your alignment if you stay aligned to a station like we used to do so you could warp off faster in the event of a problem. |

Also a lot of belts, if you orbit a roid you will end up stuck on a rock.

You can still do that. Make 4 bookmarks a goodly distance away from the belt. One to the north, one east, one west, one south. Now "circle" the roid by aligning to each in turn. You will be doing a square loop about the roid, and most of the time be at warp speed in case of trouble.
Has anyone tried using a skiff or procurer to avoid the bumpers? They got a higher top speed. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Hmm. I haven't heard of that happening a lot. Seems a bit pathetic actually but each to their own. Think I have only been bumped once by a Proteus from a mining corporation that didn't want me mining VP in the same belt as them. It didn't stop me mining there though. Hehe. |

Bumping is pretty popular these days since its too difficult to gank miners and no need to jetcan mine any longer.
Orbiting does help such as dropping a jetcan and setting orbit as close as possible to it, but if you mine with an Orca it becomes very difficult since your miners need to stay within 2500m of the Orca to dump and stay within laser range. For some reason a cruiser can bump an Orca just as far as a barge, so you can't simply set your miners to orbit the orca.

I haven't had it happen to me, but I don't mine anymore. Heck, there are corps out there that are dedicated to this now, and they will essentially ransom your mining activities if they find you.
"Sure, pay us 10 million ISK and we'll leave you alone" kinda stuff.
Since it's not an exploit, and you don't get agro from bumping, there's no way to stop the ***hats from doing it.
Makes me glad I stopped mining a long time ago. |

Set the Orca to orbit, an object, set the miner to orbit the Orca.

500M ISK costs about $15US via PLEX sales. The above figures represent an hourly mining return of $0.60US per hour. Why would you mine instead of just buying ISK? (getting a job if necessary)
I don't like that CCP sells ISK, as I think it broke the game. But since they do, this seems like the only reasonable way.

While I agree with you that mining is a huge waste of time relative to other activities, one of my friends has made quite a bit of isk mining solo while doing other things. For instance, he's been hugely addicted to Dark Souls lately so he mines on one monitor and plays Dark Souls on the other. His steam account says he has played 200 hours of Dark Souls, so at 19m/hour (he does have good skills as far as I know) he's made 3.8b isk mining while playing another game.
As for buying Plex, why do anything in EVE when having a minimum wage job is a more efficient way of farming isk than playing the game? |
