There just publishers wanting attention, there targeting nervous console gamers and they don't know anything and could probably not care less, why should you? You and i should know the video game industry would only be destroyed in a total economic collapse. I am a giant thruster... nothing else is required. I have no great purpose, all that's known i grow tired, destination unknown as i travel past the stars. Look at me going fast, as i fight forming scars, frying straight too the sun without guidance or crew. Ill never stop from going, Thrusting on.... thrusting though. |

I see kids walking around with tablets, like mindless zombies hehe. Rather soon the tablets will vid out to the HD tv. I don't think there will be a PS5. PS4 will probably be the last and will hardly see a successful run later on. IMO the US is now locked into a coming recession (did the last one end?) and will probably impact world markets, so parents and adults are going to mostly go for the cheaper tabs compared to consoles and where you can get most games for cheap or free.
Even the big AAA publishers have been embracing the tab, such as (for android:) EA, Rockstar, Disney, Gameloft (former ubisoft employees), Square Enix, Marvel games etc etc. and this list is growing especially as NVIDIA and Intel improve chips which are really nice right now at this point. Doubt apple will keep up to them while big chunky consoles will be dated as well.
Although... the Sony contract is for a year, so nothing stopping CCP from porting DUST after that. |

Consoles originally hit the scene because computers were ridiculously expensive. As it becomes cheaper to own a good computer, consoles have less reason to exist.
Consoles were made for that kind of people who know only how to insert the cartridge/disc and press play. Otherwise consoles would've had keyboards since they are 1 of the cheapest components. And the manufacturers wanted to protect themselves against lawsuits like "OMG I so a kibord and had hart atak from it... If anything, CCP should be worried about the ps4 being released. It's been announced. Why would they need to worry about that.
DUST is downloadable and will receive frequent updates like EvE. They've already said that when the PS4 comes out they will simply release a version of DUST for it as well. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Only nail in Dust's coffin, is that it's a clunky shooter ( hearsay, I haven't tried it myself ).
That's one thing a shooter on a console can't be if it wants to keep people playing.
But hey, it's free. It will have a following, might be 80% made up of EVE players who own a PS3, but still. |

This is CNN we're talking about, right? Have you read the editor's notes?
"Since 2005, Blake Snow has covered video games and other male-interest topics..."
"...male-interest topics..."
Anyone that writes about "male-interest topics" and calls it that doesn't know what they're talking about. ESPECIALLY if they specialise in that.
"...gamers' tastes have evolved to include quick, bite-size gaming sessions..."
This is bulldust - spend five minutes on the Halo Waypoint forums to see how many people spend their whole lives playing the game and doing nothing else. What about Mass Effect 3? How many people finished it inside the first 24 hours? You'd actually have to play it for the ENTIRE 24 hours (or near to it) to finish it in that time.
I don't know where this guy's getting his numbers from... or his information, but this DFC Intelligence group is clueless.
"I don't honestly think that someone who didn't want a 2-D platformer 20 years ago is going to wake up today and buy it on XBLA."
That's where they're very wrong. Retro games have been making a huge comeback in the last decade or so. As a part of a retro gaming community, I can tell you straight up, it ain't small. I've got all the Sonics on XBL EXCEPT the 3D ones (which were all **** - the 2D ones are way better). Original Mario on an original 8-bit NES... I've still never been able to clock that. I don't try as much as I used to, but every now and again I give it another crack. I must be the only retro gamer I know that hasn't been able to beat the original Mario, but even the rest will admit that original Mario was HARD!!! And games today... they're easy, boring, no challenge. There are a few very epic exceptions, but if anything's causing a slump in gaming, it's that so many new releases are being rushed to a deadline for the sake of making money and there's no LOVE in games anymore.
Lots of CGI and special effects - but I tell you what, if they put more of their attention into making a game play well, with a story that works, and less attention into the sound and graphics, I would buy that game. A great example is Ace Combat, which was a PS1 original, continued onto PS2 - it's an arcade flight combat game with a pseudo-simulation feel to it. The stories in those games used to be something REALLY special - but when it came to Xbox from PS2 in the form of Ace Combat 6, it was a storyline disaster. It was short, easy, and empty of any kind of passion. Assault Horizon tried to mend that, and it came close, it came damn close, so I have a little hope that they're mending their ways over there at Bandai. I am 12 and what is this?? |

"We" don't. Consoles as you know them are migrating from something "exclusive" catering specifics to something "collective". They have no other choice and if they choose to die this only means those putting money on those projects will or already lost money and effort when this could be avoided by using larger platforms like PC. That's not much of an issue for CCP to bring DUST514 on PC version other than those commercial contracts.
Everything that is restrictive to a single method/population/style/whatever is already dead at birth, takes a couple years to change or transform for something more intelligent meeting large collective needs instead of specifics.
There was once this guy working on some garage project, he thought about "collective" about "simple" and left alone those thinking selfish/elite Pro. This guy became one of the most important fortunes on earth with his idea at the point he could buy entire countries. A real pioneer on how to think about collective needs rather than pseudo elitist/specific markets. This guy is simply one of the 20th century genius that helped or shaped at some point our life and our future.

Consoles are fine, however everyone know games on consoles are specific, in general games on concoles offer more instant fun but for shor period, games on PC are a much better for long therm, PC games offers better grafic, more polished engines code, more flexibility, better game play, game content etc, also PC games got a lot cheap and good games with offer very long game play lenght while consoles games are damn expensive, here is just much more more love inside PC games.

ISD TYPE40 wrote:The main bulk of that article is saying that dedicated consoles are not doing as well as they used to, which is hardly a surprise to most people and, in the specific case of the Sony Playstation series of consoles, has been carefully considered and taken in to account since before the development of the PS3.
The article also makes note of many things that any respectable forward thinking company has known about, and planned around for at least the last 5 years, that more social interaction, ease of use and game prices are all factors to be looked at carefully. In the case of DUST 514, not only does it have something unique to appeal to people, but it is a free to play micro-transaction based game, which as the author of that article points out is a big draw of things like Farmville etc.
In short, I see no reason for CCP to be in anyway concerned about the future of either consoles themselves, nor of DUST 514 as a product. As they know very well, things change, but that does not mean they fade away.
Oh so CCP made perfect venture ? Nice. many games was a fail but as I can see you guys HACKed "the system" good to know ! but seriously. All ppl in game dev industry knows that game is not existing before launch, all you can do is sit and wait. After launch it will be clear if game failed or not. |

Console gaming is dying in the exact same fashion that PC gaming has been dying over the last 10 years. Which is to say it isn't.
Dust is going to suck because it's bad and console gamers especially their FPS players jump from release to release almost as they drop.
Meanwhile there are still active CSS 1.6 servers running on the PC. |
