I was kicking around the idea of low sec mining.
My plan is to use a covert ops ship to locate hidden mine fields, then warp in a Hulk to take out the field. My concern is getting caught.
Keeping aligned with a station... How many and what type of warp core stabilizers would you recommended for getting away?
What else can you do to increase survival?

Don't mine in lowsec, or just don't mine, period. Even hisec mining makes more ISK.

"cold align" really doesn't do much on it's own. In the physics engine every ship in EVE is a sphere with no facing, only vectors. Thus if you are stationary, it does not matter what you are cold aligned to, the time to warp to any location is the same. However, a hot align (moving at least 75% max speed, within 5 degrees towards your desired destination) gets you an insta-warp. Moving in the wrong direction, your ship has to shed it's forward velocity and reacquire velocity in the appropriate direction. Only advantage you gain from the cold align is that you can then hit the accelerate button to move to a hot align without having a specific destination to align to, which should be a non-issue for mining.
More important than the cold align is to make sure when you attempt to warp out that you're not going to run into rocks and get stuck.
Watch your d-scan religiously. Anytime someone shows up on Local, run the d-scan, and try to figure out what they are flying, and if there are any probes in the air. Start aligning towards a station/POS if things start to feel suspicious.
Have an insta-undock bookmark outside the station. A bookmark off-grid (500km+ depending on the grid) directly in line with the undock point means when you're undocking you can warp with impunity without being seriously vulnerable to attack.
Have a small but capable combat ship in the system. Grav sites spawn rats the same way belts do, and in lowsec they may be in battleships. Kill off the whole spawn but a tankable frig so you won't have to deal with additional spawns. Once any spawns are dead, pull in your drones, active MWDing drones are easier to probe out than your ship.
And finally, if you insist on mining in lowsec, don't take that hulk. You will lose it sooner or later, which eats into your profits and embarrasses everyone who doesn't habitually chase easy prey. Covetor is cheaper and has better insurance. |

Use a skiff if you have to. It already has a +2 against being scrammed, can fit 2 more warp core stabs.. But I suspect a smart tackler will fit appropriately when he sees you on scan.. but it does give you a beeter chance as you will see them n local first |

And the amount a skiff can mine (or should i say. cant. sicne the vield from a skiff is laughable) will make it a total and utter waste of time. |

This is all good advice.
Bottom line: the only reason to mine in low sec is if you want to mine in low sec. Null has much better profit, high has near zero risk. Low is just meh all around. I really wish that weren't true, because low sec isn't nearly as intimidating as people make it out to be -- but it's still not worth the extra risk for middling ore.
But if you are going to do it, stick to grav sites. Belts are just too obvious.
Watch dscan. Specifically, watch for probes. And not just combat probes; there's nothing stopping someone from just probing out the site you're in and warping to that.
Know the locals. It's critically important to have a sense for when your spidey senses ought to be tingling versus when that one guy is picking up his PI from the lava planet. This can even expand into some sort of informal intel network.
And use Covetors. You'll lose a few. You'll still make a profit, but you're not getting out of there with all the ships you bring in if you spend any reasonable amount of time doing it. |

If you are going to do this in a populated system and allow people to see your mining vessel either on D-Scan or coming and going from gates/stations i guarantee you several people will make it their mission in life to hunt down your mining skiff. I don;t know why, but nothing makes low sec PVPers froth at the mouth more than a mining barge...other than an industrial.
Seriously. I know lots of people who have gone GCC .04 sec after seeing an indy/hulk and give up getting on a Bhaalgorn or Carrier kill. Its ridiculous. I think people just like killing the ships they normally never get to kill because they don;t normally fly out of high sec (miners etc).
Just saying, if you're going to do this pick a sparsely populated system and be extra careful. Stick to sites not belts and for gods sake be careful. Stabs wont help you more than once. Once people figure out you're mining they'll come out of the woodwork. |

Go ahead, fly into low-sec with your nice Hulk. And I promise you you'll never do it again. I've done it myself, and I've in turn become the hunter.
Miners don't belong in low-sec - the isk is really REALLY ******, the risk is too great. If someone kills you, learn from the episode. That's probably why most people hunt miners when they show up - to educate you >:D You shouldn't be in low-sec in a defenceless ship, so get some teeth and shoot them back with something made for the job. PVP is also more fun so consider selling the Hulk and buying a fleet of Rifters. |

Veldspar has a better isk/hour ratio than ANY low sec ore, so you might as well stick to highsec. |

Have you done the math? Last time I plugged in the numbers, Jaspet, Hemo, and Hedb were all worth more ISK/m3 than Veld. They're still not worth the likelyhood of loosing your ship, but they are worth more ISK. |

Thank you.

use a covetor, its much cheaper u might as well only fit warp stabs in the lows spam Dscan for probes if you in a grav site mining isnt worth it much |
