Perhaps my google-fu has failed me, but I can't find an answer...
On expansion release day, how long is down time typically? I ask as DT for me is 6am, and I'm taking the day off work. I don't want to miss any initial player fireworks. As a noob player, this is my first expansion but..... I don't want to set my alarm clock to early.
Been following a lot of posts the last 6-8 weeks and I'm excited to see what happens. EvE, it's all about tear managment. |

A good expansion or bad? I think I've seen it as short as an hour. My first expansion was I think incarna, which had the servers up and down for the better part of a day. It was when I learned to stick a long skill in the queue for patch day. I think I lost about 6 hours of training that day. |

They typically take the server down something like 4 hours before regular downtime on patch day, and plan to have it up again 6 hours later, which inevitably gets extended by anything from 90 minutes to 36 hours. |

Truth.
Honestly, its a real crapshoot. Though the one they ended up giving everyone free SP for the day+ of server down was nice. It will be atleast a 1.5gig download, so that will add some time to get everyone up to speed, my honest guess will be server back online 6 hours later than normal. If i had to put money on a time, that would be it.
Also, on patch day, there will be alot of short "ETA"s given out by CCP if they foresee the patch taking longer. Typically there are several of these updated after the previous one expires. So, if they start saying "will be online in another 20 minutes" after they are already past their previous ETA...just go watch some Netflix or something constructive and come back in an hour. It's what i wish i'd done every. single. time. http://blog.beyondreality.se/shift-click-does-nothing -á-á < Unified Inventory is NOT ready... |

suggestion is probably set your training queue for fighters 5 from scratch or something
simply because in all of CCP fashion which we all know and love, CCP breaks the server first a few times, then gets it working a few hours after another patch + the release
Edit: it's CCP's way of saying, go outside and see the sun for a while and enjoy real life till your sick of it again, then come back |

Honestly mate, Patch day is probably the WORST day to take off work. While CCP have got much much better at rolling out upgrades, mistakes can and do happen. Your typical patch day is characterized by endless posts from CCP saying "SOON" followed by a bunch of frustrating game breaking bugs that need to be patched the next day. Set a long skill queue of at least a week and forget about Eve for the day.
Seriously, take the NEXT day off work, you will appreciate it much more. |

The only reason to login on expansion day is to make a profit on whatever item(s) became FoTM. In my experience flying (and fighting) on expansion day is exceptionally dumb but YMMV.
In terms of how long deployment takes - about 6 hours is average in the last few years. Its also fairly normal that the server will get at least one emergency restart to hotfix something important which the expansion broke.
Were I you I'd just go to work as normal, read the forums and enjoy the expansion day wailing |

Also take into account that you don't know how broken Retribution will be on release. If we are lucky it's just T3s flying backwards and POSes shooting blues, if we are unlucky CCP will release the new Crimewatch in a completely broken state and high-sec will either be Free For All or Total Concordokken Helldeath. I'm a NPC corp alt, any argument I make is invalid. |

Also, this depends on how quick your internet connection is, for bigger expansions you may have to download several 100MB's of data (so if you're on a slow dialup "your" patchday could be much longer than others).
But server DT is typically 4-6 hours, and when something does not go according to plan 12. Hope you will enjoy your first expansion, personally I've seen all kinds from the last 18
Hope you get a great day even if you take it off work - the forum I'm sure will have lots of fireworks too!

I joined the game just after Apocrypha came out and my first expansion was Dominion. So this will be my sixth I think. Budget for half a day but plan contingency for as long as is practicable. A good time for that battlecruisers 5 skill if you don't have it. For both filling time and in preparation for tiericide. Two birds, one stone so to speak. Which upgrade was it that it was down for so long that CCP handed us a bunch of skill points to make it up to us?
If I recall, that one, they ran a DB clean up tool that started running through the inventory database an making random changes to item numbers, and they had to restore the old DB and fix the clean up code... took... if I recall.. more than 24 hours to get the server back up and running.

CCP will say servers will be down till X hour.
Offcourse as usuall they won't be and that's when the fun starts every time. One thread after the other about complaints that servers are still down , CCP now saying servers will bee up an hour later wich they won't , even more whines and threads about thiss. Finally the server goes up ......... and will go down again a few hours later and we repeat the above again.
Best thing to do on patchday -and i use this for patchweek tbh - just think you won't be able to play at all. That way any time you actually CAN play during that day/week is a nice bonus :) There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.-á |

Basic rule of thumbs and this isnt a troll.
CCP although they strive for excellence they are uber poor, the worst worst guys at actually predicting when tranquility will be online. If they say its a 4 hour downtime expect to not log on for 9-10 hours.
Theyre also very poor and actually horribley slow at updating the community during such a downtime. It mostly gets put on twitter first. Why twitter? I dont know. You'd have thought it would be HERE first on the forums but uhm no...
I paint a bad picture? I do but also I am a realist and I speak the truth & dislike bigging something up which is bad.
In my 5 years of playing, on big patch/update day I've never once thought "good job" guys in reference to keeping up with expected time frames for downtimes. Also for your information they always and I do mean "always" blame database issues..
I am pretty sure they have a saved doc on their local intranet which they copy paste to us.
