Not the first one to post a Maller mission-runner setup, but here's how I, a seasoned player just getting into missions set up my Maller for those boring lvl3 missions i have to do before lvl4.
hi: 5x medium beam laser II, 1x medium nos
mid: 1x 10mn afterburner II, 2x cap recharger II
low: 1x medium armor repairer II, 2x cap power relay, 1x heat sink II, 1x energized adaptive nano membrane II, 1x 1600mm reinforced plating
If you're skills are not for tech2 yet, substitute the mods for named items, at least the guns. The nano membrane gives 20% resistance to all, and the 1600mm (tungsten in my case) gives a pool of 4300 armor hp and with enough cap to keep that repper going for ages - It's all the tank you'll ever need for lvl3's. So in this setup you can forget about setting your ship up individually for each mission.
The only lvl3 mission types i can't perform with this setup is one where you have fast cruisers (stabbers) that want to get 30km away from you (radio crystals can hit 'em, but not with enough damage), in which case i just take my apoc.. I could do a different setup with medium guns, but i'm just too lazy.. :)
In my experience those missions don't come often anyway, so I've done about 95% of my lvl3 missions with this setup with no problems.
That's it.

I like that setup, using a very similar one myself (Just got Hull Upgrades V)
"what with those cap power realys in the low's ?? got for a 3x hardners and you got between 68-74% resitance to ever dmg type "
3x Hardeners, Repairer, Afterburner and 5x guns.. I think you'd run out of cap something rotten.

5 small gun's, ab should only be used in burst's(anyone who leaves it on deservs to run out of cap!) and skills + the cappy's in med should take care of the armor repairer

been running lvl3s in it non-stop for more than 2 months now: just as good post patch.
Hi: 5x medium pulse - anode atm 1x Med Smartbomb
med: 10mn ab II large peroxide cap battery fb-10 cap recharger
low: Med Repper II 2/3 hardeners cap power relays to fill.
in 2 hardener config can run repper hardeners ab and guns indefinitely - my cap skills are @ 4, im getting 2016 cap in 168 seconds.
have yet to encounter something that can break by repair rate.
the 3 hardener version (for angel mish) can only pulse ab... or turn off the repper and close range with the ab. with 68% being you lowest resist with cruiser 4, it takes a group of angel npcs more than a minute to eat through your armor, and the t2 repper can eeaasiiilyyy catch up. its almost cruel the way i tease them
will reach 450m/s+ with decent nav skills.
****
boring? i find lvl4s boring, cause i have to them in a battleship... yawn, need to train hacs fast...
lvl3s in the maller are for fun -------------

why bother with the 1600 plate ???
sure it add's a nice chunk of armor but it dosnt effect armor you gain back per sec like a shild expander

5x Medium Beam Laser II
1x 10mn AB 1x Named Webber 1x Large Peroxide Cap Battery
1x Medium Armor Repairer II 2x Hardeners 1x 1600mm Nanofiber Plate 2x Cap Power Relay
Without the webber, drones in close can be a problem. With decent cap skills, every module on this ship will happily run 23/7. ------------------------------------------------------------------

with the amount of dmg you are going to be getting you need a few k hp to make sure your t2 repairer can keep up other wise you ill get into structur to easly, try it youll find the 1600mm are soooo usfull in this setup

There are a few level 3 spawns that have the ability to outdamage a medium armor rep II maller's tank, but none can do it by much. The plate buys you more time to kill off enough ships of the larger spawns to be easily able to tank it again, and its not like the powergrid was going to be used anyway. Medium lasers are too inefficient for lvl 3 missions because a maller doesnt have any missiles/drones to deal with frigates. ------------------------------------------------------------------

Seriously guys, loose the 1600mm plate. Add another hardener, or a small armor repairer. Use the extra PG for some better guns.
There are only a few situations where the larger pool will be better than more resists or reping. Lvl 3 missions are usually not this situation. |

"Better Guns" are worthless for lvl 3 missions because of the sheer number of frigates that you usually encounter (ignoring the fact that medium beam IIs already do a ton of damage to cruisers). Sure, you can warp in and out to get the frigs, but thats an embarrasing waste of time when you could just do it right the first time.
The plate is helpful, but its mainly there because theres really no better use for that powergrid. ------------------------------------------------------------------

anoth good thing is that IF you run out of cap with the sheer amount of hp with high resistance you can last long enough to warp out
you will think diffrently when you come 1on1 with a maller with this setup

yeah i agree with the 1600mm.
On my rax it gvies me sooo much longer "life time". It is hard to keep the armour rep up to that of the dmg ur taking, but with a 1600mm plate u are able to stay up for MUCH long just becuase of hte sheer amount of extra armour.

makes sense on the thorax aye.
but the maller can keep the t2 repper 3 hardeners guns and ab running indefinitely.
ive found the 1600 plate to be useless in my experience.
lack of 1600 nano means more speed means i can use pulses means i can leave the webber home and fit a recharger as well as a battery = lvl3s are so easy i have to anger 2/3 groups at once to make it interesting. -------------

5x medium(small) pulse laser 2's 1x med e50 nos
10mn mwd large peroxide battery fb10 nominal cap recharger
heat sink 2 med armour rep 2 2x cap pwr relay n-type thermic n-type em
with this setup and all cap, pwr and gunnery up to level 4&5 i have not met a mate with a better cruiser. the damage may not be emense but it can out tank them biding u time to finish them off.
though if does not do too well if u are webbed of target jammed as u cant lock on ur nos.
i did recently lose this ship to a 750k, 1x500k and 2x110k spawn but i was out of my league. thought i did last for a good 4 mins.
havent tried it with the 1600 plates sounds good, but the trouble is if u add the teck 2 guns and heat sink u need the extra pwr relay so it doesnt effect ur tank, it did mine but i have not finished with the cap skills yet so that may be why.
all my mates were always going on at me to fit medium lasers saying that u couldnt fit frig lasers to a cruiser but its rubbish the difference in firing rate is emense so it makes up for the lack of damage it may even improve it, a hit of 50-100 every 2.6 seconds isnt bad.
you can even tank cruise and torps for a while, i find them easier than lasers in fact.

Just like to add to all the questions/replies that this is not a pvp setup at all, and yes there are bigger tanks out there, i'm just pointing out that this setup will allow you to keep the same setup through most if not all lvl3 kill missions (unless you screw it up yourself). If you're too lazy to change your hardeners and what not every mission you get, this is one possible way to go.. :)
And the 1600mm plate is a precaution.. Many times you will never need it, but as i mentioned I wanted the setup to be for as many missions as possible and with the relatively small dmg resistances (you can tank it a lot harder) I have put my 1600mm to good use from time to time. Simply because no lvl3 mission will get me close to structure before i'm done shooting.
So to sum up.. This setup is not the heaviest tank you can put on a Maller. This setup does not put out the most damage a Maller can put out. However this setup does not require you to set yourself up with cap booster charge thingies, this setup does not require you to put in mission specific armor hardeners, this setup just allows you to do a lot of missions in a hurry, in the "dock/unload cargo/complete mission/accept new mission/undock-in-a-hell-of-a-hurry"-fashion. That's it. I started doing lvl1 missions saturday afternoon, and tuesday night i was on my first lvl4. (Actually not doing missions more than a few hours a day) People asked me how i did that. Well, this is how i got through the lvl3's.
Post over on my behalf.

For maller fit 2 named webbers and a tech2/named ab in your mid slots.
Forget the 1600mm plating, use the grid to fit cruiser sized guns, focused medium pulse work better than you may think.
I havent seen a rat yet that can not be hit by cruiser guns when its got 2 webs on it. The ripper drone may be a problem but ive never let em get close enuf and dont forget , with cruiser guns youll have more range so youll be able to shoot it from further away.
1600mm plating should only really be used in a tackler role for pvp, tank it up to lock down an enemy bs/bc for suport to come.

I was using the ship fit tool to try and build some of the setups I've found in here. I replaced the beam lasers with pulse lasers in the first example in this thread and I come up with a power requirment of 1543. Am I missing something here.. even if I had engineering up to 5 that would only put me at 1062 which is well short. Am I missing something here? Are there some skills I'm glossing over that increase Power?
Looking at the dates, I don't think there should have been many big changes in the two months since it was first posted. Help.

Yeah, you can tank a Maller up to 90% resists on guristas, serpentis, or bloods - but the rate of cap consumption even with good skills doesn't leave much for consistent pounding. Considering most npc encounters are mixed with many incompetent npc pilots, or many small targets, the maller isn't such a good choice for these encounters. If the maller can run just its tank for a crew though, it can perform rather well just by leaving guns off, hardners on and running a single rep once or twice a minute or so. AB use must be sparing as mentioned, or simply left off in favor of more capacitor boostage. Use cap boosters for high intensity, short encounters, or passive boosters in meds longer ones. -- The maller just doesn't handle a draw of +20cap/s very well so its tanking will always be limited.
I only deal with tech1 setups because they are the most resource hungry.
Hi:4 Heavy Beams (or 5 Focused Beams) - other 1-2 slots don't matter because you will not likely be using them. You can fit for whatever it is you do that is a frequent mistake. Remote rep, SB, cloak, smaller turrets, etc. Med: An AB for keeping range or sensor damper for shutting down long range foes. 2 Tracking Computers. Low: 2 Heat Sink, 1 signal amplifiers, Armor repair (optional), or wcs(optional), and the rest tracking enhancers.
The target lock range and optimals are very hand in glove with this setup and leaves more efficient fitting options for dps. -- The fit is very close at over 1050 PG and a little over 300 cpu. -- You will be sniping and hitting regularly at a comfortable altitude of 55-60km, well outside the range of heavy missiles or turret tachyons. You will be cruising at over 400m/s and have a sig of 130, have a nice flight. Tradeoff for heat sinks if you feel you don't need as much range to be comfortable. -- This is not a bad choice for Angels or Drones. I usually take no damage at all. Cleanup is what takes the longest, but sniping is still a good choice for a squad. Locking Times & Evil Asteroids |

Edited by: Vishnej on 24/06/2005 16:19:44 There is a benefit to frigate guns. But it's not what you think. The cap use isn't that much of a problem when you train cruiser + controlled burst.
The Dmod/s of "Medium Beam Laser II" is 0.9/s. The Dmod of the cruiser guns (adjusted to account for different ammo) is 1.0 for longrange focused beams, 1.4 for shortrange heavy pulse, and 1.2 for the others.
No, the biggest benefit is in the tracking. The number that the tracking equation uses isn't JUST tracking, it's (tracking/signature resolution). The cruiser guns have a sig resolution of 125, the cruiser guns have one of 40.
So to compare tracking properly, the frigate guns' tracking is multiplied by 3.25. These are drone/frigate killers.
-------- I use a focused medium beam setup for longrange on my Maller (Which was slowly improved/adjusted from a Duramaller)and Prophecy. I prefer this setup to the frig beams, but I do have to web frigs that get into orbit range to kill them.
