ok, here's what i am thinking...
being an agent runner by myself up to now i have to add a few points to what you have written up there: well, i would have fully agreed if we were talking about the pre-patch area. level 4 missions supplied ISK and not-so-nice-but-ok loot. after the patch this is completely different. loot is crap 99% of the time, half of the items are basic so even refining them does not pay for the work to collect them. even collecting is harder now because you can not view inside a loot conti if you are more than 1500m away from it. bounties are higher now but i would prefer better loot to higher bounty. as an agent runner you do not have any opportunity to get cool stuff for your (usually) raven. so you buy it off escrow at horrible prices (this IS a ISK-sink). if you refuse to buy this sort of equipment you can NOT do every mission without risk of loosing you ship, except you have the uber skills that newer players lack. agent drops giving t2 construction components suck - they ruin the whole PoS running industry.
but, if this is all just so freakin easy as it is always said, why do people like me look to other ways to make money or do something else? the answer is clear, you can make more money without agent wmissions - if you know why. you even do have more fun with it than doing agent missions. so why aren't you just doing it?
1. need investment to buy good stuff (not given for newer players)
2. need experience to deal with dangers outside empire (not given for newer players)
3. need ideas about how eve works (not given to newer players)
4. need some have-to-have skills for some of the actions that are not belonging to basic skills of the first 3 months of playing as well (at least for some operations)
/me doesn't want to specify more detailed what's meant with upside points.
to put some of it in numbers: playing sind december 2004, wallet around 80 million, 1 raven, 1 ferox, some cheap ships, NO uber equipment except from 6 malkuth siege launchers (which aren't really belonging to uber equipment). soloing most level 4 missions for over 2 months now - so if it is as you always tell, why am i NOT rich?
btw. i am looking for alternatives right now as i get bored of agent running, but with what i own, what i can afford and what skills i have it is not easy to get something started. there are points you mentioned that simply aren't true. there are some that hit the point very good. it is not black, it is not white, it is grey. and grey is boring. so agent running is boring... but there are no viable options for those who came late to start eve...
