Of the 2nd group, there seem to be another subdivision into 2 groups. Some people don't really mind when they lose a ship to NPCs, of course they don't like it when it happens, but they can deal with it. However, if their ship loss was due to another player rather than NPC, then things get really ugly for them. For some reason getting killed by another player is considered personally offensive for those people. It seems to be that majority of "carebears" fall into this category.
Attitudes towards griefing and what people consider griefing is also interesting. To the majority of "carebears", any form of PvP is griefing and any successful kill is ganking. Am I assuming too much here?
You would be wrong. As one of the "carebears" I can tell you that indeed, losing a ship to an NPC is annoying, but happens. Losing a ship to a PC is distressing only because some jackass got enjoyment out of causing me problems, now I have to go back and get my cash up in order to get a new ship.
As for greifing, ganking, and real PvP. Well, most of us non-PvPers refer to PvP as a consensual act, which it is assumed that if you enter 0.0 space you expect to engage in PvP, therefor its considered consensual. Ganking is camping a spot, that people have to come through (like a gate) and shooting people that dont even have a chance to defend themselfs. That is cheap, low, and childish.
Greifing is a wholly another matter. Greifing can be anything from just being an ******* to someone over a period of time longer then say 15 min (and even that long can be considered greifing), all the way to this recent rash of suicide attacking on miners in 1.0 security space. To me that is exploiting a poorly designed game mechanic for your own benifit. Greifing could also be setting up a situation where you will lure a non-PvPer into low sec space, then gank them when they are defenceless.
Notice, that if you are ganking, you are not always greifing, but its a fine line, step too far to one side, and you are nothing more then a cheater, greifer, or general *******. But both behavior is looked down on by almost everyone ingame except those that do it, end result, we all believe that you are a 13 year old child (or younger) that wants attention you cant seem to get from your parents.
IMHO, the only PvP people should be doing is consensual, that way there wont be complaints and petitions about people being retarded.
