Does anyone know if its both possible and legal to extract the Ship meshes from the game and then use say Maya or Max to open them ??? ----------------------------------------------

Seen the movie, V Nice. Shame no one wants to help the rest of us with it.
Took me 6 months so far modeling EVE Ships and now I see someone has been able to extract the models :(

I built a 4ft Typhoon miniature and am planning to shoot it on green screen and comp it into this cg asteroid field I made... I just need to find someone with an HD camera.
If I had the time I would totally model some of those ships in HIGH rez... I will be posting a blog about the building of this typhoon, from the frame construction to moldmaking the hull detail, and finally painting... It was real fun.

You can easily extract the models from the .res files. Not sure what program to use with it tho but maybe 3DStudio can handle thm.
Use Stuff Extraction Tool to get them.

I have around 20 conversion programs for every possible type of 3d Mesh file and none of them recognise the .tri file. Even the one that say they CAN convert .tri :( ----------------------------------------------

.tri
maybe that gives some more info? Or it is a completely other program, what about the .blue?

Tried that one. Alias files converter wont recognise the file and throws up errors :( ----------------------------------------------

If you're a programmer (real programmer, not that GUI VB crap :D), you can built and import engine.
Basicly the .tri is just a saved collection of vertexs, and faces with some texture data plus some other oddities (like LOD, shader or other related texture processing info)
Maya or 3ds max wont import them because the .tri is most likly a propietary format, and no one else in the world besides CPP uses it.

But honestly you should create your own models, being that you can create alot higher definition graphics with ones made from scratch, then the ones in game. Remember in game graphics are meant to be lean, whereas movie graphics are supposed to be beefy.
