Before we start throwing RP reasons in,i think lets consider this from CCPs point of view.
The titan was supposed to be killed. It was supposed to be shot at by a few hundred players, preferably in battleships and die after hours and hours of fightning.Maybe days really.
It would then hand out the fantastic 1 billion + bounty that is only present on certain inactive characters at the moment,as well as dropping shadow serpentis mods and certain incredibly rare items limited to the serpentis corp.I will give you a hint : its not mods.
Everyone would be happy and talk about the event for days.Dozens of screenshots and fraps would be up with probably a video or 2 with commentary and special effects.
The players get the biggest event since....i think the guristas attack on circe......and CCP is happy, because it shows off more about eve, upcoming features and keeps the players happy.
This is not exactly what happened.
For one thing,CCP wanted major,wide-spread participation. Not enough to crash nodes certaintly, but it would be so big people would make special long trips to get to the event.
This is not really what happened.Oh sure some people did that, but the majority of people had this line of thought :
"Oooh big event!Sounds cool lets go check it out." "Oh damn its in some 0.0 system with funky numbers.Let me check how far it is from my location." "Ermmmmm 30+ jumps through low sec and 0.0 territory dodging gatecamps and pirates all the way?no way!"
The majority of players were logically enough, those closest to it.Which happens to be the alliance pilots in that region of space.
The simple fact that it was in a 0.0 system far away from the majority of players did not do exactly well for its participation level. Most people did not want to risk getting killed enroute just so they can shoot at a titan and -maybe- get some of the cool lot or a share of the bounty.Seriously.
Oh CCP probably thought of this. They might even have counted on it.If it had been yulai,it would have crashed the node for sure, besides the fact that it would make no sense.Wtf was a stolen gallente titan doing in a 1.0 security system with hordes of sentry guns and concord vessels around?Precisely. So they had to have it moving in the direction of serpentis territory and 0.0.
The side effect is precisely what you all know by now.Pirates seized the chance. What you got can rightly be called Eve's "Gatecamp" day.Every gate enrotue was camped.Tons of people died without seeing the titan.Tons more died as they were shooting the titan, its serpentis escort fleet, and being ganked by a co-ordinated group of experienced pvpers all setup right for the occasion. It was like shooting fish in a barrel, with a gatling nucleur missle launcher.
Once word spread that it was next to impossible to get near the titan due to pirates, people simply gave up and stopped trying.
The end effect was this : the event was,in all respects, soley attended by the alliances in the area.Oh surequite a few others chased it for a few jumps, but they didnt actually hurt it somewhat. They scratched the shields a bit maybe......but a few hours later, the gatecamps, lack of reinforcements from 10,20,even 30+ jumps away(while the pirates probably all had instas and were based nearby),the constant ganking by a co-ordinated pirate fleet perfectly setup and positioned, simply took its toll on the "good guys" side.
In the end pretty much the only people actually considered participating in the event were the alliances in the area.
CCP probably did not want to cater soley to these alliances.
Which is why,i tell you, changes will be made.ARE being made RIGHT NOW.And i can guarantee you all.......that on sunday......version 2 of the titan change with a brand new spanking news post will be here.
And i can guarantee the experience will be a tad different.
Unless you are the pessimistic sort.
