Well.
I had a nice, eloquently written post expressing my thoughts on the matter, then your forums ate it. In the course of trying to re-type it, I tried to copy what I'd written before posting to prevent it from being lost if the forums decided to send me back to a blank posting screen...and accidentally managed to delete the text instead with a mis-click. I'm going to try posting this one more time, though it won't be anywhere near as eloquent or concise as my original post (I couldn't quite find the words a second time around, and this will be the third).
Originally, after reading the blog, I wasn't sure if I was going to post a response. After mulling it over in the back of my mind, I decided to throw a few words up on the forums, anyway.
In any case, I suppose it's endemic of the human condition for our leaders to make grandiose statements and promises, only to fail to live up to them. It's something I've seen from just about everyone ranging from managers and CEOs all the way up to just about every member of the government of the country I live in. I'm sure some of them meant well at the time, but they almost always fall short or fail to live up to their promises; it's just how the world works.
I've been playing EVE for a long time, almost a quarter of my life. Since 2004 I've seen the game evolve from something amazing into something that is no longer anywhere near as much fun as it once was. Mechanics changes and sheer population density have reduced something that was once truly enjoyable into simply another way to pass the time. Over the course of the last year or so, this has gotten worse.
Yet...
There has always been something unique about EVE. Despite its problems, there is still something there, something indefinable that keeps me coming back. EVE's potential is huge, so staggering that it almost can't be grasped, if only the developers will take us there again.
The came the revelations and scandals of the last few months, and I found myself forced to re-evaluate the status of my subscription. It seemed that, over time, the game developer that I had once had more faith in than any other, had turned into EA (harsh words, I know). I gave it some thought and decided that I would watch CCP's actions over the course of the remainder of the year, then make my decision.
I was extremely surprised when I read the blog; I had not expected a huble apology from CCP at this point. Most leaders and game developers never admit to a mistake, much less apologize. In fact, I wanted to cheer when I was done reading the blog. However, this lasted only for a few moments before my enthusiasm was tempered by reality. It's easy to make sweeping claims of change, but far harder to implement them.
In short, I want to believe in CCP again. I want to see EVE again become the game that it once was, an amazing sandbox that outshined each and every other game out there....
I'm just not sure that it will happen.
Being a very jaded and cynical individual, I'm going to hope for the best, but expect the worst. Please, CCP, prove me wrong!
P.S. As expected, what I wrote above rambles and lacks significant consistency, but it's what I've got after the forums at my first two posts. |
