While I approve of the NPC AI changes in general I think it still needs a little tweaking...
One of the main problems I see with the NPC AI drone selections is that you get no warning they have switched targets. By the time you notice they have already been taking damage for a while due to damage display delays.
Would changing the drone GUI to give a yellow boxing style warning when the drones start to get targeted be enough to make them usable? Giving you that little extra bit of time to recall them.
What would be the rough lock time for a NPC frigate to obtain lock on a small/medium/large drone? |

When they unlock you it means they are going after the drones and there is more than enough time to bring them back. |

That might work when solo, but otherwise is useless. IMHO I'd love to see 3 things added at a minimum. It doesn't seem like this would be THAT hard to implement, but who knows.
1. Drones should warn when they are being targeted. Preferrably some sort of configurable audible warning. Heck, they added the cap sound, which still makes me jump. Also that drone should flash in the drone window so I know which one to recall.
2. I should be able to see my drone's health while in the drone bay. Nothing more fun than playing the which drone to redeploy game.
3. some sort of Hotkey system so I can more easily select the one drone I need. Maybe use the module slots.
Some other cool things I think would be handy.
Maybe a drone repair module. Can repair drones while in the bay (one at a time). Could be similar to a RR as far as cap use etc so its not totally OP. but would allow to rep one drone while keeping a full flight out. Maybe scripts could switch between hull shield or armor. Be pretty cool for those deep null all in one explorers too. It could also mitigate the potential future issue instead of just making bigger drone bays.
Configurable drones. Maybe I don't need my drones to go wtfpwn fast in missions. I could choose light drones with AB's instead of MWD. Would go slower but wouldn't have a crazy sig bloom either. |

You clearly don't use drones.
How long does it take to recall ogres which are 10-20km out. What if one or more gets webbed?
Not enough time to recall them. Dead Ogres or whatever other drone. The only real chance at avoiding a drone death is to keep them within 3-4km of your ship. Even then it's tough. |

Some pretty good ideas above; I especially like the drone fit window, that'd be an excellent addition without a doubt. Also, I never understood why we have to guess which drone is damaged after they return to bay.... wth. Let us see drone hp when in-bay, as mentioned above.
I'd like to add:
- A GUI setting that auto recalls a drone back to the bay if it takes any damage (personally, I don't think this is crossing the line, but having a setting where the said drone flashes when it does take damage is a good compromise).
- Renaming the drones to whatever we want to call them, like ships, would help some, i.e., "Drone 1", "Drone 2", "Drone 3", etc.
- Being a mission runner, with a few ranks in Multitasking, I'd love nothing more than a way to queue up first, second, thrid, fourth, etc, targets so they don't kill that frigate 5km out and then go for the battleship, flanked by more frigates, 50km out as the next target. ....stupid F'n drones.....
- Also, being a mission runner, failing that idea above, if it's not appealing, how about a 'priority targeting' by ship type feature, or even better, by ship type AND by distance from your ship, i.e., hit all frigates and hit all frigates that are less than or equal to 9km from your ship.
See, this isn't really e-z mode for drones since the mission AI is now sleeper AI. This would all be a good addition to drone features given the current state they're in. |
