au-+rum noun Chemistry . gold. Symbol: Au
Let the conspiracy theories begin! Also for introducing a mechanic where the biggest fear is gold ammo / ships. Why would CCP choose a name such as aurum. Just wondering if CCP is running out of names like how they name their expansions. Or purposely wanted to fuel the infamous EVE-O conspirators fire.
On a side note, I like the name itself even though I never plan to purchase Aurum. Unless of course they reintroduce some of the old backgrounds like concord, that news one, and the pirate faction, which were awesome. Or cool masks... and head gear to perhaps. CCP have always been poor at naming things. Large swathes of space are named after variations of Pacific Island words, Japanese words, South/Central American words. By the time they got to 0.0 they just gave up.
Hell - they started naming the planets - but didn't get much further than Amarr. They then wrote some "lore" to make it fit their laziness. |

Wow, this thread's about two months too late. There was about 87 threads freaking about "Gold Ammo" coinciding with the release of Incarna, Fear of Gold Ammo being one of the primary reasons behind the "lets shoot non-destroyable objects for lulz and lag and pointlessness" Jita protests.
Most of the drama has since subsided, ironically once everyone heard ship spinning was back the pitchforks all went back on the shelf.
I think by now its been said about 87 different ways that CCP is not going to implement pay-to-win schemes. You can certainly try to start another wave of fearmongering, but I don't think it will work this time. Everyone's now distracted by the latest Devblogs. |

More likely they chose it like they chose the ISK name.
ISK is the international FOREX label for the Icelandic Kr+¦na.
Before Iceland had a decimal currency it had the Kr+¦na and a sub unit called Aurar. With 1 Kr+¦na = 100 Aurar
Aur is a word for "money" in Icelandic. As in "+ëg +í ekki stakan aur" as in "I don't have a penny left"
Edit: Dammit, didn't see the Dev linking to wiki...foiled again in looking smart on the forums! |

So trying to say Aurar is the reason they choose to make it Aurum, makes about as much sense as most of the conspiracies we see on the forums. Just saying "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" |

You do realize that anyone who paid attention for 5 minutes in chemistry class would've come to the same brilliant deduction it took you two months to piece together?
Au on the periodic chart of elements is gold. Au is short for Aurum.
In other breaking news, Caldari ships are named after birds. Ornithological Conspiracy? It must be!

I was simply stating the ironic fact that everyone was worried about gold items. And yet they named their currency gold in Latin. Also, I appear to be the only person so far to post this. So I figured I would give the conspirators something to chat about. In the end do I really care? No, not really. I just hope people have fun with this. "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" |

It's not really ironic if you're the only one who didn't get it until now.
Posting the direct translation of one word into another language and then declaring conspiracy isn't really post-worthy, so yeah, you're the first to do it.
Fun is being had with your observation, no worries. :) This is my signature.-á There are many others like it, but this one is mine. |

Aurum is indeed Latin. Latin is a dead language. Nobody speaks it anymore. Interesting marketing to name a currency after a dead language! It should be sold in units of roman numerals

AUR is also Welsh for Gold. Then again, there's quite a bit of Scandinavian in Welsh and, of course, Icelandic. |

Was hoping this thread would be dead by now, but since it's not... Yes, AUR is named after Gold in Latin, even if it's named after the icelandic coins that are named after gold. Also (read the wiki) Krona = crown in latin, as in "money issued by the king." So the hell what. It just means CCP sucks at naming things (surprise surprise) |
