...possible?
I'm doing a few missions for Ishukone to boost standings before getting a decent R&D agent. I've been doing level 2 combat missions without even scratching my armour, but am a little concerned about the level 3 ones, especially after seeing what a friend of mine has to contend with in his battlecruiser. Training up for a BC is not really an option, as it's not an avenue of the game I want to explore at the moment. So could these missions be completed in a Caracal, or should I stick with courier missions for now?

Ah, do not make the mistake of overestimating my stupidity at the controls of a ship! But thanks for the advice.

I think it is possible, althouigh i think you might have problems on some missions.
Silence the informant has a nasty 2nd stage, the four ships which are at the entrypoint melted my shield with 50% res pretty fast.
Operation Hamstring has 3 Merc Commanders and 2 other merc ships, if you happen to aggro them all it could end up bad.
Rouge Drone Harassment is just mean overall :)
But overall most of the missions are doable, they just require you to warp out and use your speed to keep distance.

Make sure your ship is fully insured. I think I have lost 5 or 6 caracals doing lev 3 combat missions; the last one was last night. Doesn't mean I am going to stop using them for that though. The Rogue Drone Harassment will have you losing a ship.... It's funny. One mission I survive no problem. The same mission the next time through I am looking at my pod.....

I do lvl3 missions and 4/10 complexs in a caracal and find them easy, only ever had problems from drones.

I have been doing Lvl 3 Kill Missions in my Caracal for a while now, and once I got over the initial learning curve I found them to be quite do-able, with one exception. I can't kill the final drone in the Rogue Drone Harrasment Mission, just cannot break his tank without help. Can anybody help me with this?

I've only done lvl 3 missions in a caracal - easy enough to setup/refine.
In case you want a setup...
5x heavy launchers with scourge 10mn MWD/AB (depending on mission) Medium Shield Booster 2x Cap Recharger 2x Ballistic Control or 1x Ballistic Control, 1x Power Diag (there is another I use, can't remember which)
To make it better, upgrade this setup with tech 2/named items and you're sorted :)

High: 5X 'Malkuth' Heavy launcher Med: 2X NPC-appropriate Hardener, 1X Mediam C5-l Shield booster, 1X Peroxide Cap Battery. (swap battery for extra hardener if you need it. Low: 2X Power diags. Or One and a ballistic control.
Strategy:
Always warp-to at 60km. move within targetting range and then statrt shooting. The key is staying out of range. Stay aligned for warp by moving towards a warpable object. On some missions you'll end up with a can trail spanning more than 150km, warp-to the furthest cans to maintain range with your targets.
Rogue drone harassment is the only one that will really give you problems. The Strain Domination drone hits hard and often, harden as much as possible and be ready to bail out. You have to try to get inside his fallof (closer than 8km) or just get someone in a shuttle to follow you in and orbit him fullspeed at 500m while you bail out and repair your armor. He's a tough one to kill.
Other option is to use a different ship with a heavy armor tank for him, such as a Maller.

Funny only one I had problems with was silance the infomant...never even took a hit on the rogue drone harrassment mission...
Yeah I was at the extreme range of my weapons, but its a long range ship...sue me

The above is the one I use with success for all L3 missions, EXCEPT I use a Large Shield Booster. You need named stuff and Weapon Upgrades, Electronics & Energy Grid Upgrades preferrably to 5 to have enough CPU, but after that its a walk in park.

Interesting... how do you deal with the large amount of cap drain? :)

Fire off 2 rounds of Thunderbolts to kill the shields and then switch to Havocs. Despite what's listed on Eve-I, the armor tank on the drone is weakest to explosive damage. If you just can't beat the tank, send out some Valkyries and swap in a Ballistic control or two in the low slots.

I readily admit it was an easier 1 spawn mission but I did complete a lev4 with cruisers and a low bounty battleship in a caracal. Only thing that hurt was the occasional cruise the battleship fired at me and I was able to shield boost it anyway. The mwd was extremly handy to keep the cruisers getting anywhere near me and the bs must have been using autocannons because it hardly hit at all either. I did need to go back to get another load of missiles though. It took shedloads to break the battleships tank.

Don't try Damsel in Distress in a caracal. This was the first ship I used attempting this. You gate into this and immediately are getting hit by 3 sentries for 75dam each shot, and that was WITH my sheild hardeners. If you manage to kill those without dying first, then you face a group of 5-6 frigates and 1 cruiser with 100k bounty (Zazzmatazz's Assassin). The frigates are easy.
The Assassin ate my caracal. I came back in an even more heavily tanked Moa. It ate that.
I came back in a BB tanked even harder with +2000 shields. It almost ate that about 8 times. Finally these 2 nice BS pilots in local offered to help me out.
Don't attempt this in your caracal, get help or just reject it.

You need to take a step back and evaluate your setup and tactics and figure out what's wrong with it. This mission is not too difficult to do in the Caracal (the sentries and cruisers hit a lot harder in Angel Extravaganza ).
As for the cruiser, how are you managing to do any Lvl3 missions if you can't take out one 100K cruiser? Lock and fire at maximum missle range according to your skills. It will die before it gets within range of its weapons, even if you stay still

I don't think we should hiijack this guys' thread. All he was asking is are L3 do-able in a Caracal. The answer is of course, "yes". From my own experience, all L3 combat missions are both do-able and challenging enough in a cruiser, (for this Caldari anyways) be it a BB, Caracal, or Moa. The BB is usually my last choice, the Caracal next, and Moa first choice.
Even the other L3 DS missions are ok in a caracal, except Damsel in Distress. That was my point. This particular DS agent mission is way too hard, and poorly constructed, and is not L3 imo.
(PS - Mr. Know-it-all, the range listed for the Assassin isn't correct, it can in fact fire from ~50km or slightly more, and has an excellent damage "tank" against all types)

I think discussion of Lvl3 missions in a Caracal is the point of this thread is it not?
The range of the Assassin listed in Eve-I is quite accurate. It will fire explosive heavy missles at you every once in a while once it's aggroed but it's guns won't be doing any significant damage till it gets within 20-30km of you. And while it may be shooting, no NPC cruiser in this game can hit you at anywhere close to over 50km range with it's guns. That range is reserved for BS. If you claim otherwise I'll put in a preemptive bulls**t right now
