According to some locals in catch, there are POSs, some worth upwards of a billion ISK, which are offline, abandoned, and have been sitting there unnoticed for months.
Why the hell would anyone sit so much money unprotected and simply leave it? Anyone have any ideas (or those who own these POSs care to explain)? -- The best description of alliances, ever:

I was wondering the exact same thing. Apparently people sometimes forget to fuel them with minerals.

Don't you have a lot of experience with having a valuable thing unprotected and leaving it?

That was pretty funny. Though its only worth about 80 million, which honestly is pocket change.
The certain POS I found (and destroyed) was worth about 800 million in modules alone. I got about 200 million in cap recharger IIs. And I found a Dominix in the ship bay.
The locals picked up about 400 million worth of fuel and ore. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

A somewhat inaccurate (I don't remember exactly) tally of what the POS had that I blew up:
Amarr Control Tower (I left it) 10 hangar arrays, many filled with arkanor and fuel. 2 Intensive Refineries 8 silos, 2 buffer arrays 3 moon miners reactor array about 25 assorted guns about 15 assorted EW batteries ship maint array with inty, shuttles, indies, and BS.
All destroyed (or looted) but the control tower -- The best description of alliances, ever:

lol I almost left my our POS's just drifting there when we decided to take them down and wait for some changes in the fuel/hauling situation. It takes SOOOOOO long to unanchor and offline everything. Not to mention most corps have 6 or 7 full corp hanger arrays with loot, ore, equipment, ammo. Also a full ship maintence array or 2. Its almost an acceptable loss to just say **** the 700 million there and leave it. 3 of us spend 3 full days(about 8 horus a day) hauling **** only 4 jumps to a station.

But with this one they could have at least sent a frig down to pick up the 200 million in cap recharger IIs and looted items... -- The best description of alliances, ever:

Since when can you find ships inside a ship maintenance array again ?
Don't they just anchor outside it and stay there...
Are you simply lying Dark Shikari ?

No, they sit inside, if you've ever used one.

Well, there's some rather small POS owning corps out there. If they guy who keeps it fueled if off on holiday for a coupld of weeks or went inactive, or just found that he no longer had 4 hours a week to keep it running. If no one else realises that this is the case, then it'd be fairly easy to abandon it.
OK, so leaving it filled with valuable stuff is a bit of a criminal waste. And it's a pity there's no way to nick an offline tower :).
In fact, it may be easier to just leave it there, and write off the bill, because they really do take forever to take offline. I don't mind the running cost of a POS so much, but the hauling time of all the parts and fuel is what I find to be the killer.
So I can quite see someone getting ****ed off with their POS to the point where they can't be bothered shutting it down cleanly.

Well, it took me nearly a week for our clean POS-Shutdown. the whole offlining itself is only a matter of a few hours... it's all the stuff accumulating in the hangars which took me a week to get it from POS to the nearest station, where half of the stuff is still stored because i didn't bothered moving it to our HQ
I guess for some people this hauling is probably too much after they already spent weeks or months to get all this stuff to the POS at all, and so they just decide to abandon it and be done.

Edited by: Dionysus Davinci on 18/05/2005 13:08:37 FYI, you can blow up POS without taking a security hit in low security.
Needeless to say, I and Lordless decided to show a POS Owner why he shouldn't let the POS run out of fuel. Took everything down but the tower. Dreadnaughts are needed to take that thing down while you're young.
I took a bunch of screenies of the explosions ^_^, blew up over 200 million in modules.
Go to planets in low security, scan and if you find a control tower but no shield showing up on the scanner. It is offline. Do your civic duty and blow them up.

Funny thing is that most of Eve is a waste of time. The fun part is playing the game. POS are alot of work and current config of the POS is that they are a closed network of owners. As long as the network does not use the market most will see this only after they set up a POS and try to make it work for 4 months.
I say USE POS ofr temp production. Put up the least amount of mods and take it down when your done. --------------------------

Some added info for the curious:
Both POSs were in RNF in Catch. The former was owned by Freelancing Inc (or something like that, I'm at work ATM so can't look it up). The second was owned by the guy who posted above.
The first POS, by far the most expensive one, had been abandoned for months according to locals. The remaining control tower is at Planet VIII Moon 15, IIRC. The second POS, which apparently wasn't abandoned (as while I was killing it a bestower from the corp showed up) was at planet III moon 1.
I scared myself half to death when destroying the first one--when all the ships came out of the ship maitenance array I was so surprised I thought they had decloaked on me or something . When the 12 bestowers or so came out of the second, I was pretty damn surprised too -- The best description of alliances, ever:

I'm a straight shooter and I'll tell you the reason why people are abandoning it. CCP thinks that after we get off of work we will go mine ICE (virtual salt mine) to feed some tower to keep it running. What part of GAME do they not get? Are they that fed up of coding and reading whines on the boards that they are sabotaging their own masterpiece making it tedious and generally not all that fun? I'll tell you why people are dropping your not going to like it. People do NOT want to WORK in a game this is NOT a JOB it is a GAME. I'm not playing to mine and sell $#!t on EBay IĈm paying to play a GAME. How your going to let me play it is not my job that is yours. 0.o It's not you... no wait it is you. |
