Me and several others are interested in starting up a Industrial Magazine for eve online. Now obvious there are legal questions regarding the use of Eve art, (Screenshots, ship modals, backgrounds, and general game art) I was wondering what CCP's policy was on this issue. I've read the Terms Of Service and either cant find anything in there about it or i am missing it aside from the "all rights reserved" and general trademark jargin. So my question is, can we use screenshots and modals in a magazine?
A new Magazine would be good for the eve community and increase user experience. It would be supported by players in game isk or real life cash. Our modal would be to hire writers from in game and pay them isk per articles and use plexes to get the in game currency to support this model. Players would either then pay in game isk or real life cash to download and read the latest issues. The real life cash would be used to buy PLEX's to keep the cycle going as well as real life profit for the makers of the magazine.
Now obviously this would require CCP signing off on their artwork (modal's, backgrounds, game content) being used by such a publication. EON Magazine is an example of this kinda of thing, although I do not know if CCP owns and produces it, or if there are agreements in place or whatever.
So if any admin's know the answer to this, I would be really grateful for a responds, or directed to an email address to the person who would be in charge of dealing with this kinda thing.

I know off the top of my head you are not allowed to make a profit of of their work. Cover server costs with advertising but that's it I think.

My brain doesnt work well this early in the morning but dont you have to ask [email protected] or [email protected] if you can.
Those emails might not work. Might be best to petition and see or hope an ISD or dev has a nose in here. Post with your brainGäó |

A side note for the people who posted. What do you think of the idea? Would you pay isk or cash for a magazine targeted at Industrial, RnD and Trader Pilots? Assuming we hit the desired quality of content. ^_^ |

Not being harsh, but it is odd how I've watched you make this and another thread for a few weeks, and just googling CCP took me 60 seconds to get this. -á"I am not young enough to know everything." - Oscar Wilde |

I'm going to ignore the harsh tone and just tell you that I don't want to call them. Just wanted an email, or someone to answer a simple question. But thank you for point out the exact same information I had already found. At least you cared enough to submit a reply.
Cheers. |

Using a logo is more often the concern, trademark is more stringent than copyright. Images, such as screen shots for publishing, or art from screen shots are low priority regarding publishing rights/freedoms, usually encouraged as press release promotion etc. though repeating the same image on multiple issues standardizing it for your use is more questionable - or as static website art - "EVE" merchandising (garments, mugs etc with EVE logo) - usage more so needing some level of permission [if] capitalizing at least to cover your interests and theirs. See: publishing rights, copyrights, trademark rights for detailed information, all publicly accessible. Also, using in-game currency for purchase could be an issue if CCP makes it an issue, as well as being an inconvenience to administer such transactions. I'd suggest making a sample issue, an outline of your business model and any media assets usage requests, send them the info via email to CCP. Side note answer: not interested. |
