2. AdAware, updated.
3. A good Antivir of your choice. (Not necessarily resident in memory, but recommended that it is)
4. Active process protection. (Feature present in SP2, more developed on focus software, like antivirs or specialized firewalls. Tiny Personal Firewall excels in this aspect.)
5. Make sure you know what 'Services' run on your computer. You can find out by going into Administrative Tools section - Services. More info about Services here
That's about it, really. --------------------

that toolbar can be a MAJOR pain to get rid of. I tried everything...2-3 times and it would still reappear every time i closed and re-launched IE. i hate to admit defeat, but format/reinstall xp was the eventual outcome. :( Since then, Firefox - no more spyware.

I think CWShredder helps get rid of coolwebsearch toolbar. And yeah firefox = teh w1n.
Also: AVG/Avast( ) + Zonealarm (or another good free firewall) + ad-aware + spybot + microsoft spyware thing + spyware blaster = practically immune from everything. ----------------

Spybot is the way to go for anti-spyware and its donation based payment only
Also for anyone who likes a more hands on approach i find Hijackthis superb. It takes some getting used to as you need to find out which are the nasty programs on your PC yourself so you can get into trouble. There is a good website that will analyse your hijack logs and help you out there though Linky to hijack log analysis page

When I used internet explorer, I had to scan my computer for spyware at least twice a week to keep it from clogging up.
Since I started using firefox about a year ago, I've scanned my computer twice for spyware, both times gotten less than 10 results.
IE is evil. Firefox is digital jesus.

Ah yes hijack this, not that i have actually ever needed to use it to delete anything, in the 4 months i have had this computer it hasn't been infected with ANYTHING. Nothing at all. So I think my set-up is pretty good. ----------------

For god's sake, stop using Internet Explorer. Switch to Firefox or Opera.
It's like smashing your head constantly into a brick wall and asking for good pain killers to get rid of that horrible pain...
