right now low sec sentry guns are placed rather close to the gates to defend players from pirates, This does what it is supposed to do, deny pirates the ability to camp close to a gate and gank people.
However it also encourages pirates to stand stupidly far from the gate and gank people. Snipers are harder to defend against then non-sniper setups, the piracy profession fills with people who should by all rights be mining veldspar in Yulai, and ransom pirates are like rare birds, kinda like the dodo or the Caldari Heron.
My solution to all this is to actually move the sentry guns so that they form a ring around the gate at sniper range. The guns wouldn't be able to hit a ship at the gate, making ransom piracy more common* and sending the 8 stab gankers back to the roids of Yulai. You could also pirate in ships smaller then a battleship.
* This of course won't bring back the 'golden age of ransom piracy', mostly because that age never existed. But even if there are a few more ransom pirates in empire, people who want to do that might stop complaining.

thought the Sentry guns in 0.4 and below were few in numbers and weaker, even destructable or atleast be able to "tank" the damage they do for the people that know how from experience

They are fewer in number and tankable, however they are not destroyable, and by tankable I mean tankable in a BS (or maybe an assult cruiser). They pwn anything else.

Sniping needs to die, tanking is fine however.
More range, or better placement makes sense. _______________________________________________

well shows how often i'm in the low security zones eh don't know where i got the Destructable part from
the Sentries could be Further from the Gate but since in the low security zones there aren't always enough of them to form a Square of them around the gate it would just cause them to move to the less well covered side of the Gate

The balance of the games sugests that few noobs in good cruisers should be able to be a threat to a BS. In empire while pirate hunting anything else but a BS is worthless. All thanks to the great concord killing your efforts on upholding law. Cruisers could be a great cheap disposable but hard hitting ships. However they are not and extra agility will not help it against sentries. I would like to see the T1 cruisers being used by somebody in an actuall PvP fight.

Here's a thought:
Battleships: warpto any object at 150km Cruisers: warpto any object at 100km Frigates: warpto any object at 50km
Also, if an object is farther away, it should take more time to lock. This is not a multiple on top of sig radius as then armageddons would still instalock. The geddon and other fast lockers should only instalock at close range.. remember the whole charge into battle thing?

Something else I throught of. Since the guns would be in a ring around the gate (a shell actually), a person could fly to this shell (or probably have a semi-safespot) and have some protection from pirates who like to ransom pods and see if the gate is clear to pass through. Pirates could still snipe people who do this by standing at the gate though.
