I would like to see a type of high slot weapon that interecepted incoming fire, for a third type of active tanking. These weapons could either be turrets or launchers (perhaps both types could exist). They way they would work would be to be active modules that fired at incoming turret or missile fire. I thought this might ring a bell for anyone familiar with Earth Force ships from babylon 5. They tank by shooting down enemy fire.
So yes active modules, once activated they would intercept on a one for one basis turret and missile fire. Another place this occured was in Independance wars 1+2, where the "shields" would track enemy incoming fire and shoot it down.
I see this as a potent tanking system for one on one pvp , maybe not so great for missions with multiples of targets. I can see carebears like myself objecting to that bias, but if they were powerful enough to deal with 15 ships in a level 4 or 5, they would be Over Powered for PvP.
I would be perfect for some ships already in existance, ships with a mix of launcher and turret slots for example could one of those groupings for what i will refer to as Defender Weaponry. This might mean those ships being resigned to give a Role bonus to defender weaponry. I can see you howl how this would benifit Minmatar hulls since they normaly all have both types of weapon high slot already.
But for a bit of RPG element , they could introduce this as stolen jove tech, or as an ancient home planet with Terran Level technology could be found, thats just a few newspapers and maybe an extra faction to gain rep with like the joves.
Ofc if this is of interest to you plz comment constructively.

Well defender missile already exist but they're kinda awful and turrets already have tracking disruptors so it is kinda iffy to add another thing to counter turrets Starships were meant to fly~ |

well they would be general purpose and would supplant defender missiles for one thing. They would have to be effective against turrets and missiles to work. But they wouldnt be effected by logi on thier main active tank. Also i didnt say it had to be !00% effective, it could easily be skill based, with several gunnery or missiles skills applicable.
It would also be using a lot of Power Grid so it would be unworkable on a lot of ships. Also it would use Capacitor to run those active highs. So it wouldnt be as if u could fit them and also a decent shield/armour tank. I would be a replacement type of tank not an addition.
Ofc im not saying u couldnt have a specific ship for this that is better configured to use it. But you are essentialy swapping DPS for tank, which happens with armor, maybe not so much shield.
Thanks for commenting in a way which allows for more examination of the issue tho:)

I think that adding a module to disrupt turrets which have already fired could be hard to make, and from what I've sort of been thinking about, it's called resistances.
As for defender missiles, I would think that they could be much improved by having a random missile targeting system and actually hitting the target much faster. In my previous experience of defender missiles I have seen them dance around a missile and not hit it which allowed all the missiles in the volley to hit their target.
So my proposed changes would be to get defender missiles to randomly select a target and also hit their target faster (not missile velocity).
Something that might also work would be a defender missile launcher, a launcher designed specifically to take such missiles which would have a better ROF than the ones that defenders currently go in and have a bigger capacity. |

CCP needs to fix defenders to have a smart, attack sequence, faster fire rate, and stop piling up on missiles. They also need to attempt targeting on any inbound missiles. Hell, we have systems like that functional today, why not this far in the future. But intercepting direct fire weapons? Not laser or rails or blasters. But possible artillery. Frankly tracking disruptors would work better and they already exist. |

Main thing that bothers me about this line is the defenders really cant be applied to anything that didnt already have a launcher slot. The TD works well for reducing the dmg of a turrent ship. There appears to be a gap in this area I would agree. Have not personally studied the subject from beyond the standpoint of TD amarr ships. /like overall |

makeing defender missiles that could also intercept turrets could be valid also? im afraid i fly minmatar and defenders are a waste unless you know your fighting a missile ship. But yet both the typhoon and cyclone have enough specific slots for a missile defender system.
My idea aside, current defenders suckzor and if the idea is to be useable then they have to require some sort of improvement. My suggestion is improve defenders by more than a mere stats bonus, also it has several drawbacks to make em multi purpose regarding incoming fire turret/missile, it would be an ammo based tanking system like the ASB's currently. Even if they dont shoot down turrets they would have to run more ammo than normal to cope with a higher ROF. Thus my idea would be like a high slot ASB at its core , in its stats wise in game statistics. But if improved enough then it could become the sole tank. Modules would need to be created to boost their effectiveness , essentialy im suggested making a more advanced techy plot wise than ASB or current defenders. If u really want it could just be for a new tech three ship type for the first couple years then filter down to tech two.

Missiles intercepting turrets is impossible, missiles just aren't fast enough to do so, there's a reason real world battleships put miniguns on the sides of ships to shoot missiles down.
Having anti-missile turrets like in real life would probably be the best way to do it. |

Hmmm great idea here:
We will get a module that shoots out energy, and counters some of the energy of the incoming missile/turret damage.
I think we should call them "Energy-antidamageenergy sheildy energy emitters", or maybe just "Sheild Boosters" |

In RL you really wouldnt need a fancy turret mod to give you an extra defensive barrier,in space.A simply jet of water spayted out towards the attacking ship at high pressure would do LOL.The water would freeze nearly instanously into a block/sheet of ice .Thus exploding rail and missiles also artillary before it reaches your shields and as water refracts light it would difuse a lasar beam aswell.Maybe this is the ulitimate end idea of the seasonal snowball launches we have all recived LOL |

Forgive me but I've been watching both Battlestar Galactica and Recently the Movie "Battleship".
What could be done is that a module can be made which essentially acts like a shield against incoming fire. Yes yes I know we have both ship shield, armor, and repairers, but really nothing that intercepts incoming attacks (which is what defender missile were suppose to be.
I mean three high-slot modules could be made and be made to function like this.
1) Defender missiles/defensive rounds, intercepts missile fire, rocket fire, and turret fire (intercepts a percentage of the incoming damage). Does not work against mines, torpedoes, bombs, super weapons, drones (except sniper drones).
2) Assign Defense Module. Can assign defender modules to a group-mate. Aka, similar to assigning drones to a person in fleet, allowing your defensive module to defend them.
Two targeting locks would have to be assigned to defenders with these conditions.
1) if nothing targeted, missiles/turrets defend yourself only (must be active) 2) if a target is targeted, two assignments... a) Defend against, meaning the modules would be used to defend against the weaponry used by that target, regardless of who that target is attacking, and b) protect, meaning that target you have target-ted will be protected against incoming fire by your defense module.
It helps reduce alpha strikes, makes fleet composition and strategy more interesting, and gives people a different way of protecting valued assets in a fleet (AKA you can actually DEFEND a person, Protect a Escort, etc).
