The reasons are innumerable but to be honest? I enjoy the story. What drew me into Eve was the stories of the great wars between mighty alliances destroying what amounts to thousands of dollars of real world money (If one were to plex). I enjoy the internal narrative of each alliance insisting they are good and the others evil. I like to see empires rise and crumble. I love the clash of personalities. I live and breath for the complex politics, the backstabs, betrayals and also the lasting friendships that form. Lets face it, unlike faction war, or mission running we're the only ones that have a complex and interesting storyline with interesting characters, some evil, some good.
I like to shoot people. I like to take what they had from them and give it to a three day old newbie I have trailing me around. I'm Robin Hood with a bubble and a cloaking device.
Most of all I like to tell stories. As many of you well know goons permeate pretty much every MMO community. I've played with Goons in STO. I've played with Goons in The Secret World, I've played with Goons in Guild Wars II. And almost every single time I hop in mumble/teamspeak/whatever the next goon guild I join uses and we get to talking about MMO's in general, at least a half dozen of them have some great story from when they played Eve online. No one gives a **** about the 347th Onyxia kill and how oooh wow the gun dropped this time. But people remember the fall of Delve.
Hell half of these people hate this stupid game. They hate how the skill queue works. They hate how PVP basically amounts to collating a spreadsheet. They hate the unending structure grinds, pos mechanics, mining, ratting, they hate the bombastic assholes that are in charge of GSF (One famous saying known to goons is "Goons will be free when the last director is strangled with the entrails of the last moderator"). But they love their stories. They cherish them and hold on to them, and they love to tell them to people who have never even heard of this game.
Why do I live in nullsec? Because blowing up mission rat number 387 so I can fit my ship to blow up number 388 a little bit faster is about as compelling as whacking my balls between a pair of bricks. |
