I fly a combat frigate, right now I am trying out a Punisher. I want to go with lasers exclusively. I have available to me:
2 store-bought medium beam lasers 3 store bought small beam lasers 1 pirate dropped light modulated beam laser 3 pirate dropped modulated pulse lasers
What combination of lasers would you recommend, with which lenses, and why?

Hi...
First of all, only laser I personnally don't think it's a good idea...I got a punisher, and I still have to optimise the setup, but it works well like that... -2 dual anode beam lasers, fitted with radio at long range and multifrequency at low range -1 125mm railgun with iron (long range) and antimatter (low range) -a rudimentary smartbomb (24 damage, for lesser CPU/grid than EMP). -medium shield booster -prayer tracking link (boost turrets range/speed) -2 e-type cores boosting cap/recharge rate/shield -a small expander -an alpha hull expander.
I can take rid without problem of pirates in a 0.2 belt...And have enought cargo not to get back to station after 3/4 fights :) Anyway, my expanders where there before the latest patch and I think I'll remove them in order to put tracking devices or something like that... So you change crystals mid-fight?

So you use Radio at long range, then when someone is close you use one that gives bonuses to heat damage?

Just look at the range on the crystals. Radio is best from a distance. When you get closer look at things like multifreq. --------------------------------------- CSM Chat Log September 25, 2003: Fuhry> Some things we simply cannot test, and therefore we just put it on Tranq. cross our fingers and then get into panic m |

i got equipped on my Punisher is.
1xMedium energy beam(hi)(radio s) 2xlight modulated ions(hi)(antimatter s) 1xciv shiled booster(med) 1xsmall armor repair(med) 1xbasic cpu expanders(low) 1xheat sink(low) 1xalpha targeting system(low)
for close combat i use all 3 the mod ions do most damage their(6km), and for range i use only the energy beam(13km). i set the civ shiled to autrepeat and only turn on the armor repair when in trouble. i havnt pushed my ship much yet, only hunted in 0.5.

if you want some real wierd fun, try 3 medium pulse lasers, multifrequency crystals... 1 afterburner, and 1 small shield booster... and 2 cap recharger 1s... that would be utterly insane... would need engineering 1 to do the loadout

For NPC hunting I like using only lasers. Pulse lasers are nice on frigates because of the lower cap / CPU / grid requirements, but beam lasers pack more power and range. I'd recommend 2 medium pulse lasers and 1 medium beam laser (pirate drop always preferred of course). For crystals, either use multifrequency (great for 1-2.5k bounty pirate swarms) or swap between crystals depending on range.
My Punisher loadout was:
2x Medium Anode Pulse Laser 1x Medium Andode Beam Laser 1x (empty slot) / micro smartbomb if you can cram it in
1x Small Converse Shield Booster 1x Afterburner
4x (whatever power / cpu / speed boosters you need)
It was a fun way to fight small to mid-sized frigates in groups, but do NOT attempt a cruiser! (ok, good advice in ANY frigate) Also, trying to solo groups of anything over a 4-5k bounty is VERY dangerous. You should be able to take on ONE high-class frigate pirate, but not two at once...
The only way I could see safely taking on more than one 5k+ pirate with lasers only is to pile on the speed and use a couple of good beam lasers with radio crystals. And for speed you'd really want something that has more medium slots than a Punisher.
On the other hand, not having to worry about ammo when you stumble onto one of those endless low-level pirate spawns is nice... :)

I am very happy with my punisher and really am not that interested flying other ships. Unfortunately like every one I will be forced to, if for nothing else cargo space. I solo 0 sec areas, but agree its better with company. this is a setup that assumes long range fighting. No mwd or ab so keep out of 10k range (web is bad) unless you are sure you can take them (remember spawning point) Fitting: 2 medium beam with radio 1 250 artilery, prefer titanium sabot but accept photon 1 micro smart bomb (not as impresive against missiles as they were)
medium: Basic cap. recharger a shield booster (basically small shield)
low: 2 power diagnostic system I a cap flux module nanofiber internal structure
Can run all guns constantly, and still have left over for shield and smartbomb. yesterday, had fun shooting 6-10k pirates in 0.0, my main trouble was finishing a 5 pirate swarm before the respawn. See space full of containers.

Can you explain to me how to use a smartbomb to fight off enemy missiles? When I try it the missiles always still hit me.

I have most, if nto all the different crystals, and what I did was install all of them and hit show info. One at a time of course. This gave me a current readout of all the optimal ranges to all of the crystals from radio right down to multi. Yours will be slightly different as youll have dif skills mods but with teh beam I have a max range of 12kms down to 4.6kms with the multi. And depdning on your fighting style. Long range or close in you can optimize to fit within ur style and what the weapon can do. I usually take a long med and short range crystal for all of my guns. This way depending on target and distance I can change the crystals as I fight. I like to change one at a time as they pass through the dif zones of fire, ie long to short as they pass through med so by the time they get to short range the srystal will be in tracked and firing away then change the other or engage another farther off target with the long crystal weapon. This optimizes firing and makes sure I dont over saturize an almost dead target and let the others slip in and start nailing me. Also remember that a dry gun, one without any crystal still does a 3 EM and 3 Thermal damage on its own.
Normal setup is 2 Beams on the Merlin and launchers of course. 2 Radios, 2 IRs and 2 Multis or Gammas. Sometimes if Im in a higher rated space Ill try a beam and a pulse. Radio/radio-12kms and down, UV/radio@7km, Gamma/IR@5km, and Multi/gamma@3500m. This setup saves on cap a slight bit. But beware if ur going all lasers to watch ur cap, especially on a long warp into a tough system, as itll get eatten up pretty fast and if u warp in to a system right in the middle of a bunch of bad guys u might be screwed unless u can outrun them. With this setup in a Merlin I can take out anything up to and including a 0.3 system. Watch out for Caracels and missiles though ;)
Have fun.

If you can find one or find someone selling it, I highly reccomend the Medium Modulated Beam. Its a very nice Beam laser =)
