I was doing the Angel Extravaganza with a friend and being in a support ship I got a little bored with far to much time to think. I came up with the crazy idea that if all the rats where shooting my friend is there any reason why I cannot MWD to the group shooting him, let of a bunch of smart bombs hopefully hitting there missiles so my friend has to tank less and killing the rats at the same time. Then move onto the next group. All with 0 defence modules, lots of cap recarge modules and perhaps 1 amour repairer. The nice thing is you always hit and if the group is close you hit more then 1 target. No more turrets missing targets.
Being late at night I am sure I am missing something. So why wouldnÆt this work? Or is it just a case of fitting rail guns with damage mods works just as well?

Well, why don't you try and let us know how it went?
Your Heavy Neutron Blaster II perfectly strikes Serpentis Chief Sentinel, wrecking for 660.4 damage.

...or you could just sit there and shoot them. I think the rats generally only attack the first person to commit an act of aggression (which in a group should be the uber-tank).
Anyway, you should probably be asking this in the missions forum...

Edited by: LUKEC on 28/05/2005 23:29:18 they were discussing this idea for 10/10 angel complex. Basicly you could do it.
EDIT: For now.

It would probably work. The thing that makes it really funny is that if the rats drop really good loot your smartbombs will blow that up too. :)
You don't save the good loot do you?

the reason might b that u were the suport ship.... if u go flying off attacking ships with smart bombs won't u move out of range? also won't it b better for both of u to use drones + u with a few turrets firing cause i can't really c any advantage of u using the smartbombs in this instance tbh

I've found Smart Bombs don't damage loot cans. On those mission that spawn a lot of close combat frigs and cruisers i just start up 2 SB's and wait for the exploding to stop. All the loot is in a tight c around my ship.
It's fun to watch 6 Guardian veterans go pop all at the same time. :)

Seems to me the thing keeping smart bombs from being effective is the near total lack of skills for them. The very few skills they have isn't enough to counter act other weapons that get tons of skills/ship bonuses to increase their damage, range, rof, etc, etc.
That being said, if you hit 2 things with one, you've already effectively doubled the damage, so if you can make sure to hit a lot of things at once, they'll do decent damage overall.

Once smartbomb amps come out (see Eve Data), then probably.

If you think you can do a better job, go find yourself a datacentre to host a box, get a copy of Visual Studio, and STFU.

ö Well you won't be able to use your MWD in deadspace.ô Good point I didnÆt think about that, so itÆs going to have to be an afterburner then. Another thing I didnÆt realise until you said MWD, was the MWD will kill my cap so I have to run less smart bombs.
ôAnyway, you should probably be asking this in the missions forum...ö I wasnÆt really sure which forum then I decided it was more about module layout and ships then missions.
ôthe reason might b that u were the suport ship.... if u go flying off attacking ships with smart bombs won't u move out of range? Move out of range of what?
öalso won't it b better for both of u to use drones + u with a few turrets firing cause i can't really c any advantage of u using the smartbombs in this instance tbhö My idea is that with my current skills worse case is 1 smart bomb does more damage then 1 Neutron Blaster with anti matter ammo best case is the smart bombs do more then triple the damage. Most of the time the smart bombs hits 2 to 4 targets so you do x2 to x4 more damage then a blaster and every so often you hit 6+ targets.
My blaster average damage is 200 per hit (including missÆs and wreaking) with anti matter ammo and 7, T2 damage mods with a 5ish KM optimal range but I can only fit 4 weapons, more weapons if I lower the amount of damage mods.
My smart bombs are 200 per hit, always hit and hit more then 1 target though named boost that a fair bit and I can fit more smart bombs then blasters. So in theory smart bombs out damage my blasters. But I better test and make sure.
I just thought of another problem the smart bombs will stop the enemy ships missiles so we have to tank less but at the same time stop my gangs missiles.

From my experience a large smartbomb or two (on my domi) is great to take out all those guardian veterans orbiting you at once, but for anything bigger they just do too little dot and at a terrible cap cost.

I also consider the Smartbombs a defensive weapon. Using them to support my mates in L4 missions sounds scary, as you have to fly very close to your enemies and also keep them in range to be effective. But nevertheless, the Smartbombs are fine to defend yourself againt nasty webbers - especially these Guardian Veterans.
