In my experience, Icelanding business culture tends to be a bit nationalist, and employers can sometimes be a bit biased against immigrants. Not always, just a cultural problem Iceland is dealing with. |

Ok, never been there myself, but thinking about the average temperatures in Reykjavik, it doesn't seem that cold after all. Anyone here that can enlighten me how much it really fluctuates from those averages? Just thinking because at some parts here in Finland, stats show average temperatures at somewhere around -6c in january, but we have seen it go as low as -40c at the same places sometimes. Same goes for summer +16c averages, but some days it might rise up to +30c.
Also, as Reykjavik is located at the coast, I assume it gets a bit windy there at times? Just interested because I've always wanted to visit Iceland. |

Genealogy is like that Too much mystery coupled with the assumption of speculation I think. I've been hearing about this and that regarding it for 20 years and, to me, the best I can follow with any reasonable credibility is back to my great grandparents. Before that is kind of sketchy.
The most interesting person of note in my family, is my Moms grandfather on her Moms side. The guy was raised in an orphanage, was adopted, and became Egbert Arthur Alvis, eventually moving to Canada and becoming a wealthy business owner. No idea who he was or where he came from as he has no birth records.
Interesting because he's completely without a family history that's traceable, and could be anybody.
Sorry to derail the thread. Just got side-tracked.
I like the fact that some of my family is from Iceland, and sort of regret the fact that I know very little about it and have never been there.

Not sure how much help we all were. Best of luck with your journey and I hope you have a good time there. Also, there is always the Snorri program to consider for those over 30 interested in Iceland.
That would probably be a great way to involve yourself with the culture somewhat. It's only 2 weeks though, and I'm not sure what the eligibility requirements are beyond personal interest.
It says on the page there that you have to be from Canada or the US apparently. I assume it has something to do with travel arrangements or maybe directly related to the goals of the program. I assume you're from the UK, from your post. Fortunately though, that means you have less distance to travel to get there.. zubzubzubzubzubzubzubzub |

assuming Icelandic are humans afterall, they should be racists towards foreigners coming from the south. This could be a problem. ______________________________ just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not after you |

A good pack, decent snow shoes, good merino wool socks, waterproof and insulated boots, layered clothing, preferably with a base layer that wicks moisture away from your body, a warm and wicking hat, waterproof mittens (loose finger gloves don't allow enough warmth to get trapped), a good scarf or something to cover your face.
I've never been to Iceland personally but would LOVE to go. Being a former meteorologist though, definitely be prepared for the cold....and you should be fine. |

I visited Iceland about 12 years ago for a 6 week study program in college. Arctic Biolgy and Geology we were learning. It is a very cool place. Be aware that the sun doesn't really behave there. In the summer, it never gets dark (mostly like twilight around 3am) and in the winter it is very dark. At it's worst for only a month or so in the depths of each season, but it's something that was weird for me (I went in June/July). In the summer, it's pretty mild, maybe high temp of like 60-70 F.
You should definitely take some trips around to see the sights. Maybe join a tourist bus trip. There are tons of cool waterfalls, hot springs, and all kinds of neat things to see. |

Elleren: You should try Finland before Iceland? Go to Lapland or Norway. its rocky and cold in both places. The worst situation is to go somewhere a half year trip and after few weeks realizing it sucks. Anyways have a nice trip and FLY SAFE! Bad Jokes since -09.... Fly Safe! o7 |
