So I have a crazy plan to go live in iceland for half a year say in 2014 because I need to escape my boring english life and have a fascination for anything northern and cold.
I just would like some advice and things.

I was reading old National Geographic magazine, they had an article about Scot and Amundsen race to South Pole. One of the points in the article was that both men made plans on how to stay warm, but... the Brit had one idea, the Norwegian had a different one. Norwegian won. Since you are Brit, whatever you are thinking, put it aside, it aint good.

We took horses and hay to the south pole. The calories per kg moved was pretty bad.
Still can you name without Google the Norwegian expedition, or does Scott of the Antarctic come to mine?

Might want to consider what kind of work is available there. 6 months is a long time, and I suspect that it's not exactly average employment opportunities for some of us. Fishing maybe? Bartender? I know they don't have much in the way of trees, but if you're a geologist..
Ironically, for all I don't know a thing about the economy in Iceland, my family on my Moms side, in part, originated there. The other sides English, like my Dads family. I'm basically half and half, with a little more of one than the other, but not if you count the fact that I likely have some on my Dads side way back too. ..and then, there's the Irish I have on my Moms side from a very long time ago too.
I'm actually a direct-ish descendant of this guy according to my Mom, who has a passion for genealogy. On my Dads side, apparently it's Blackbeard, though I'm not sure how. None of it means anything as far as I know. Not anymore anyway.
..aside from the blood anyway; genetics being what they are.
Honestly, aside from the climate and the opportunities for work, I'm not sure what anyone can suggest.

Warm clothes, a high tolerance for alcohol & a strong stomach if you decide to try the local "delicacies", watch out for the Mayor of Reykjavik, he likes to dress as a Jedi and from what I can gather from friends there is a bit of a nutter.

As a English gentleman that has lived in this country for now over 8 years, i shall give you my insight lol.
while learning Icelandic is not essential it is preferably if you want to get involved in conversations, i don't know what kind of work your looking for but theirs a fair bit of hotel work about at the moment if you don't mind what your doing, The pay is fairly good and i have even during the crisis way more spare cash that i ever did in the UK.
Transport in Iceland is fairly good, much better than in the UK, however I'm sure many Icelanders will tell you that the public transport is a shame , they need to spend some time in the UK country side me thinks. However if you want to buy a car it can get expensive and be a huge drain on your pocket, but as the citys so small you can walk to most places easily or you can get a bike as there's some very good cycle paths.
The night life is lively and with many pubs and clubs to choose from you will find a place you like, beer is more expensive than in the UK about 5pound a half litre but if your working here you wont really worry about that to much....at least till the end of the month hehe
