3 months?
Not even close, my friend
Going to level 3 in any advanced path will pay off reasonably quickly. Getting to level 4 will pay itself off in a matter of a few months more. Getting from 4 to 5 takes a while, I'll explain why.
Level 4 advanced learning in perception (say) takes 135,000 skillpoints (give or take) To get to level 5, you need 768,000, so that's an extra 633,000 skillpoints to get an extra +1 to your perc.
Now, it doesn't matter how long it takes you to train this extra level, it's the +1 that matters.
This +1 to perc, to pay for itself, must personally train 633,000 skillpoints itself (as you could have got those 633,000 skillpoints into another perc based skill, so you could already have a frigate 5 skill from scratch, with skillpoints to spare).
Now, assuming you train only perc primary skills, the +1 to perc will be adding 1 skillpoint/minute to your total.
So in order to pay for itself (633,000 skillpoints for the +1) it needs 633,000 minutes = 10,550 hours = 439 days.
Now, if you have learning level 5, this comes down slightly, as you gain a +1.1 for the extra point of perc.
633,000 skillpoints takes 575,454 minutes = 9,590 hours = 399 days to break even on the skill training for any one advanced learning skill from 4 to 5, assuming you train skills every day of that time with that the associated attribute as primary.
edit - btw. I did all this maths a little while ago. I decided that chances are, I will be still playing Eve in a year and a half, and I am training clarity 5 now on both my characters. Though that's the only one I'm doing....
While that is the mathematically correct way of evaluating the time it takes for it to pay itself off,it also depends on any given players skill profile and total amount of skill points too...
For instance in my case,i¦m already at 120+ skills with 40+ of those at lvl 5 and the remainder at lvl 4,and none below that,(almost at the 30 million sp mark total),with the vast majority of the skills that are currently at lvl 4,and wich i intend to train to lvl 5 being rank 5 and over skills, means that sp and time i spend to train the remaining advanced learning skills to lvl 5(3 left,10~12 days for each),costs me about 2 rank 5 skills from lvl 4 to lvl 5 with skills using my best atributes...A negligeable hit in this char¦s overall capabilities when the total skills and current sp are taken in consideration...
