Edited by: Jack Apples on 30/05/2005 06:04:27 It seems that everyone is always able to identify the class and type of enemy ships 10x faster than I can, and I'm not sure why. They're planning their strategy while I'm still clicking on infos. I've tried doing it by the size of the brackets, but I can't tell the difference between an Ibis and a Crow using the icons and I don't see how that's very helpful. Also, I have to play windowed so the picture is a bit too small to tell and even if it wasn't you can't tell the difference between T1 and T2 ships just by looking at that. I've been careful about that ever since I eagerly engaged what I thought was an enemy rifter in my inty and got owned by a wolf for my effort.
So is there any other well to identify a ship other than the methods mentioned above? --- yub yub |

Not that I know of. Just remember to always assume the worst - if you think it's a condor, it's probably a crow. Rifter is a wolf, and so on. Sod's law and all that. ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

assume its tech 2 from the picture... and boxes give size catagorys generally

Turn on the size column on you overview. (although it doesn't distinguish T1/T2 variants IIRC)

That works too, but it bogs down the overview. If you're like me and have velocity and trans vec and stuff already cluttering it up, it's best to just learn what size they are from the brackets. ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

Another tip for Tech 1/2 identification. Right click the bracket once, and it'll say, for example, "Remove Elite Frigate from overview", or "Remove battleship from overview".
It's a bit of a clunky, awkward solution, but it'll do until you can identify things from the icon alone.

If you're new and still not sure about all the ships ingame, hit show info on each ship you pass when you're traveling. Try to memorize them.

Thats what I do. But it is absolutely hilarious when the 3 HAC's, 4 AF, and 2 Intys, that you where fleeing from turns out to be 3 T1 cruisers and some T1 frigs.
Or see the cyclone which looks like a tristan in its picture. --------------------------------------------------

Easy way, this is how i do it, for those hard MF'n minmatar **** ships. Right click on it, it will say "Remove/add Elite Frigate from overview" or "Remove/add Frigate to/from overview" Elite frigate = tech 2 = think a bit. Frigate = cannon fodder. --

Edited by: Hamatitio on 01/06/2005 04:27:49 The picture does give it away for most ships. Red = Ares Green = Taranis
Orange ****pit = crow Black ****pit = raptor
Stiletto = bluish green Claw = I just assume every slasher class is one of these if its not a stiletto :s
Black = malediction Yellow/ red fins = Crusader
AF
Red = Enyo Green = Ishkur
Wolf = Just assume its a wolf, no one flies jaguars. Jaguar = Still cant tell them apart
Harpy = probably the only caldari AF you'll see. that other one. = No one really flies these :/
Black = I mm vengence? Gold + Red = Retribution...
Then some HAC's n'stuff.
EDIT: I cant believe it censored ****pit.

Not true at all, for example FowlPlayChiken flies a Jag and he kicks serious ass with it. Gotta worry about Jaguars cuz they're fast enough to close in on you in no time and then tear you apart. But it sucks cuz there's REALLY no way to tell a Rifter from a Jaguar from a Wolf using the picture. They're almost identical.
Originally by: Hamatitio Harpy = probably the only caldari AF you'll see. that other one. = No one really flies these :/
Yes, but they're very easy to tell apart. The Harpy is very light colored, sort of silvery, and it has two large rotating cylinders pointing forward, sticking out from underneath the "wings"...they are towards the TIPS of the wings. The Hawk is more of a regular grey, but it has a bright blue <o<kpit. It also has large cylinders sticking forward from underneath the wings, but they're close in to the CENTER of the ship. So remember, out towards the wingtips is a Harpy, in towards the center is a Hawk. If it's a Harpy, you have permission to sh!t your pants, if it's a Hawk don't worry, just run away like a little girl, like you should with any other assault frigate. ___________________________________________ ^^^***---All things serve the Beam---***^^^ |

If I need to quickly identify a group of ships at, say, a gate I do a quick 500k scan.

use the scanner, scan max range 360, count number of enemy in sector and then assume the worst ships are the one's to get you initially. Then once time goes, cancel off friendlies, scan where the enemy fleet is and count more accurately...that will give u a good approximation.
But ALWAYS assume worst case scenario
