So EVE Online has always been referred to being harsh on its players compared to other MMOs. Some players claim that they enjoy the harshness of the game, but it could stand to be even harsher. I wonder if "harshness" is the appeal of EVE Online? In 2004 I joined EVE online after seeing their graphics posted on a 3d software companies web site. When I heard about the market, I was hooked. I never read about how "harsh" the game was(Of course I sure found out). So do you find EVE online harsh? Do you like harsh? And what brought you to EVE Online if it wasn't the harshness? |

I would say that the 'harshness' of the game is definitely something I admire about EVE Online, but I'd venture the diverse directions of gameplay (high, low, null, wormholes), professions (mission runner, pirate, bounty hunter, spy, solder, trader, tycoon, leader, frontiersman) , and player interactions are what drew me in and keep me enthralled in EVE. Ah professions! Yes that is something else that was outstanding especially CEO/Corp relations. I was feeling very "enterprising" when I discovered EVE. |

I accidently stumbled upon EvE in 2007 after I bought a used laptop for my GF and it was pre-installed by the last owner. I was curious enough to see what EvE was all about so I created an account and logged in. The rest is history.
EvE can be a harsh mistress, how it stacks up against other MMO's I'm not sure (I've never played any other MMO). EvE online is still alive after all these years and extremely active so I guess the harsh enviroment to safe enviroment ratio is in good balance at the moment. If it was too harsh too many young players would be dis-couraged.

granted i haven't played too much...
But Eve can be QUITE harsh, and most (if not all, those that don't are not relevant ) of us appreciate that. I dunno i play wow aside from this too, if want a little hand-holding i play that. if i want an actual sandbox (for an MMO anyways), i play this.
Actually like an idiot i wandering into a Wormhole unprepared... it wasn't pleasant, but i learned that lesson, still want to do WHs sometime. |

Harsh... hmm.
I look at it as only being as harsh as the chess pieces you put on the board. Space is the board, public hangers are the board and access is the board. There are too many nooks and crannies to hide in to be completely taken out of the game and as long as you have money and assets then you can't be knocked out.
Your sandcastle is only vulnerable if it is on the public beach so as long as I can pack up my pale and bucket. I wouldn't call it harsh unless you make it harsh. |

What I am saying is sure it EVE you can lose your 5 billion ISK Battleship which some might characterize as harsh but only if you risk your 5 billion ISK Battleship and it is only harsh if you don't have the currency to replace it.
It is like a game of chess where everyone plays on the same board but you decide what pieces to put on the field. If a Queen is valuable don't buy a Queen use a Bishop instead. |

I used to Play Navyfield one of my friends in game told me that I had to come play EvE with him, it had spaceships, and rats and **** blew up and I could be anything i wanted to be. he told me something that peaked my interest because i couldn't always play navyfield due to work and stuff, he told me: "dude, if you want to fly a destroyer they have a book you learn to be able to fly it, but here's the best part... you put that book in this thing called a training queue and even if you can't play for 2 days, when you come back you can fly that ship" (almost verbatim) The thing is that in NF like almost every other game, you have to be at the helm of your ship to gain XP and if you can't play for a couple of days, you stagnate waiting to get back in and grind for that much needed XP to get to the next tier ship.
I had turned down invitations to play EvE previously from a couple of my friends, but no one ever told me that i could work toward a goal when not even logged in and actively "doing something". So i tried it and sure enough, I could get ahead thanks to the training queue and even better, I found out that in EvE you don't plan for the next battle only, you don't work for just what you're going to be doing until you log off that day, in EvE, you work for goals that won't be realized for months down the road, or in some cases even years, you have to think, calculate, plan, be disciplined in your training and focus and along the way?, you have fun, make money, blow **** up, run from the faction Navies, suck up to the faction Navies and whole host of other things that culminate into the EvE experience...
so yeah, I tried EvE and on my first day i was in a system called Dammalin and my friend said "lookie Bill" and flew up to me in a Dramiel, I saw that ship, instantly fell in love with that ships's looks and beauty and the rest (for my main) is history...
