So I've been flying a Rorqual for a while now and I Trained most of the refining skills for each ore, but recently I started looking into the compression ratios for some ores and was shocked to find out the minerals that come out of the refine take up less space then the compressed block. I don't know if I m doing the math right but, for example it takes 12k kernite to compressed into a block of 750 m3 and the minerals that come out of the refine only takes up like 463.6. if I am correct to assume that its still 400 per refine kernite after the compression. Which leaves me with only one conclusion, is compression only useful when your mining in a system with no stations? is that its only intended purpose???? I hope someone proves me wrong. |

Rorqual compression is used when you have large quantities of ore that you can't refine where you are such as in a wh or null sec that doesn't have a station and where refining in a POS means losing 25% of the minerals at best. |

Well I'm no Rorqual pilot yet, but two things pop in mind, one already mentioned by yourself, being no station closeby/wormholes
The other might be the fact that compressed ore can be stored in orehold and then transported, while minerals can't be.
So you have 250k m3 extra to jump all ore into the last low-sec system before high-sec. Actually able to move around just about the same amount of ore/compressed ore/minerals, without the need to buy a dedicated jump freighter (which is about 3-4 times more expensive and doesn't boost fleets).
Not sure though it is efficient enough as I didn't calculate all fuel prices to jump both ships but iirc the jump freighter takes about 3 times as much. |

lol damn, I feel like i wasted a months worth of training on this. Guess I'd just use the sick boosting abilities. |

Not wasted at all, you get the best boosting and ore compression , you should never refine in null or wormholes it's a waste of resources. |

Compression is used to evade local refinery taxation and to allow for easy transport from a system with no station to a system with a station. Also, it comes free with boosting. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

I thought compressed Veldspar was smaller than the trit it refined into. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Rorqual is my dream indy ship that would want to train, but not a null bear. |

I think so, but ::effort:: to check. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

Until the rorqual can refine ores into minerals in space then it's working just fine.
It's ORE and Ice compression, so the volume of Ore and Ice is reduced so you can haul it to your refinery easier.
It's sole purpose isn't so you can squash ores and ship it down to empire for mucho isk making, it's so you can move it from your mining system in nullsec to your refinery system in nullsec since not every system has a refinery unlike the majority of empire.
ie you mine in a system with no station, and rely on corp hangar arrays in a tower to store the ore/ice in before it's shipped to the refinery, it doesn't take that long for a good sized mining op to fill arrays. |

It was very surprising the first time I compressed Arkonor.
Typically I hauled a couple of Orca loads of Arkonor, but instead I compressed it 20:1, and hauled the same amount of compressed Arkonor in a DST.

In the link above you can see that the only ores that take less volume than when refined are: Veldspar, Scordite, Plagioclase and Pyroxeres. If you can refine with 0% waste where you mine, then it would be wiser to refine the other ores. Otherwise, compress them all as you will save space to move them to a station with a better base refinery % and less/no tax. |
