Good afternoon,
I like to propose to change the prerequisity to fly the Mining Barges from Industry 5 to Mining Frigate skill.
In my opinion, the Industry skill gives abilities very unrelated to the profession of mining itself and is inconsistent with the new accentuation in specialisation in any given role within EVE. Also after being able to fly a mining barge, at the moment the Mining Frigate skill is somewhat redundant for a specialisation in mining ores - while very likely to have been skilled by new pilots trying to specialise in mining.
One might argue that the Industry skill can still be usefull even to new pilots, provided they make use of the ability it gives. But based on my past experiance with new pilots following the mining profession, players tend to strive for more yield in their given profession rather than multiplying their income streams with so few skillpoints.
Of course since I am going to skill Mining Barges myself in the very near future this would have come in handy for me, especially since I stop training this character after a certain point and don't plan to do anything else with this character than mining and gas-harvesting. Thus I feel like wasting skill points on Industry. While plans may change in the future naturaly, now those points are wasted.
What I am not so sure about is the level of the Mining Frigate skill to be the most appropriate.
- Level 4 creates a shorter skillplan (directly skilling for the barges compared to the situation now) and might thus not be the best option.
- Level 5 creates a longer skillplan, given the benefits of the new mining frigate, that seems to be appropriate, but is inconsistent with skill-progression on other shiplines. So might also not be optimal.
Given the strong bonuses of the Venture my personal favorite would be to make it level 4, while stretching out the skilltime for the Mining Frigate skill a little bit. This would be inconsistent with the skilltime of the other 4 frigate skills, but than again mining is completely different compared to the roles of the other frigates and may as well be a little detached from those training-time-wise.
Constructive opinions appreciated. |

I think what you are saying makes a lot of sense. Perhaps level 3 or 4 in Mining Frigate, and a level or two in Refining would make more sense than Industry V. After all, as you progress in mining you'll end up with Refining anyway to advance toward mining crystals.
It always puzzled me why Industry V was a requirement for Mining Barges. |

Good point. IMHO, the requirements for the barges should only be Mining Frigate IV
Adding to that, the following changes would make sense....
Mining IV -> Deep Core Mining Mining IV -> Strip Mining (new skill) Strip Mining IV -> Modulated Strip Miner II Deep Core Mining IV + Strip Mining IV -> Modulated Deep Core Strip Miner II Ice Harvesting IV -> Ice Harvester II Gas Cloud Harvesting IV -> Gas Cloud Harvester II

Well, I am not that far into the mining carreer yet to make notions about the other skills Somatic Neuron posted.
Erinn, as it stands I always found someone with Refining 5 and perfect standing to refine my stuff for free. The benefits of joining a player corp I guess, which is why we should leave it where it is - in my personal opinion.
While I would not really oppose your suggestion, my intention behind this proposal anyhow is to stay reasonable with the skilltime. Meaning we should end up with about the same skilltime than before (or more, since the Frigate is really good). So moving Refining further to the front of the skill plan is not helping this, since it does not replace something but instead remove something (Industry) and move other stuff around a bit. And in my eyes there is the big chance we have - now that there is a Mining Frigate skill - to replace the Industry skill with something more usefull.
Stegas, if you meant to bring them into the state of V3, then I believe the plan is to do it with every single object in game sooner rather then later. |
