apart from allowing you +2/+4 extra targets does anyone have a tactical use for them or is it more use in fleet engagements for the bods calling the targets out

The problem is that they're broken. Otherwise they'd be extremely useful to instantly (well, within 5 seconds) lock any target within range, as that's their main purpose. The bonus max targets is another thing they do. Useful for battleships facing frigates.

Target numbers increase, fast locking. The former's generically obvious why it's handy. The latter makes it good if you're taking an indy (e.g. a badger) into combat, or you want to cheese around the sensor recalibration of breaking cloak.
That's about it :)

Lock any hostile target within range. That means you can automatically lock anyone who attacks you and is within range. But they're broken - they randomly lock any old junk you happen to fly near, and intermittently don't lock people attacking you who are within range.

Basically you should rename this thread into "petition to fix the autotargeter" thread. While you're at it get the T2 ones w/ double the range in, that would be useful as well. Also the autotarget function needs to be altered so that it locks anything that you have set bad standing to, not what has locked you, otherwise you're severly nerfing it's usefulness. Perhaps it uses your overview settings so you can set it to only lock target types you're interested in. At any rate they're a non starter atm.

well as long as the modules prefer to lock dustclouds and beacons and any other junk, they're useless. i wish it could read "valid" targets from your overview settings, so you could configure it yourself.

I came up with a number of very useful useÆs for the module but they all got nerfed. One of the best ones was to decloak turn on the auto target module and get a target lock bypassing the 30second sensory recalibration. The devs did not like this and as soon as I posted about it they nerfed the module at the same time breaking it beyond usefulness. Now the module often just cycles not locking anything.
Personally I think the above was a valid tactic as your giving up a high slot + cap drainage to get better sensor lock time.
Another use was for PvP matches involving the same corp. When you have a drone ship v drone ship from the same corp in a PvP match it gets messy. Both ships struggle to tell which drones belong to them and which ones are there opponent meaning you cannot shoot at your opponent drones. When the auto lock module worked it locked the hostile drones hitting you and not your own. But now you have to put with the module half the time cycleing and not locking anything.
Another method I cam up with was two use 2 module's 1 set of 2.5 seconds after the first. This means you lock eveything evey 2.5 seconds.
As for the dustcloud comments yet they do lock dustcloud but oddly only when you within 1km range.

You have hit the nail on the head.
A mod that allows you to automatically lock back a target that has locked you is a waste. Your ship will automatically lock them back anyway.
As you point out the best thing they could do is have them auto lock any targets that you have standings set into the negative. If they could do that I would never leave dock without one fitted.

If it works, it allows you to lock all hostiles within 10Km, which seems to me to be the optimal range for webs, warp scramblers, and most frigate guns. I'd say if they work they're designed for those "utillity" high slots on the Punisher, Tristan, and so on...
Makes dogfights much simpler, when you just have to choose which target to fire at, and not spend time using the overview to lock them. Since in dogfights, the closest target is usally the most dangerous, or at least most likely to be trying to shoot at you, I'd say that if they worked, they're pretty good at what they're supposed to do.
I'm still waiting for them to be fixed myself. I can't wait to fit them.

Sounds like a good mod for a BS with extra high slots like a Raven, but its not like they need anything else to help em hehe

I like the overview idea...and frankly it sucks that they nerfed it in relation to cloaks, I mean if you cant dedicate 2 hi slots to making an effective cloaking ship...why bother.
