If I take the term 'Sand-Box' and apply it to EVE, it does not seem to fit.
A Sand-Box design should not have any goals, but yet this game does appear to have goals; specifically the creation of corporations, alliances, factional entities and unofficial coalitions, plus numerous social-political structures and hierarchies.
If this is not a sand-box, then why are there not more official structures and aspirational goals to attain singularly or collectively?
EVE seems to meander its definition.
Is it a sand-box or not?

Eve isn't literally a box of sand, short of that I'm not really sure what you want?
Edit: I'm pretty sure if you go to any sandbox IRL you will find player made goals and relationships. |

The term sandbox cannot be applied literally since the adaptation and evolution of the word versus the game over the last decade has taken on different meanings.
Sandbox as a term, is used loosely since this is an open world mmo with various definitive rules. In short, it's using facts to shape around a theory.
People like to use literal terms to degenerate a meaning they hold while at the same time using assumptions to homogenize or waterdown their intent since gamers as a whole think they need to be desensitized to everything to be "cool".

Pretty much this.
I don't see how any gaming company in the near future could create a coherent game if they took the term sandbox literally--and by this I mean, space with appropriate mechanics and building blocks. Expecting order to arise and rest entirely upon players is impossible.
Otherwise CCP can add more content and complex progression systems into the game. This might eventually create an illusion where there are no real goals to strive for since so many combinations exist (even this depends on each individual being able to perceive them). |

There are plenty of others who hate these economic terrorists as much as we do, but all these geniuses who shoot miners don't manage to get together, unless some greater entity (Hi goons o/) makes them band together for their own betterment.
I'm not willing to participate in their mindless hatred against a single target/playstyle. I have my own mindless hatred against every other target. ^_^

EVE simply has the tools available should players choose to pursue those kinds of structures as their goals.

Sandbox, noun. Irregular noun that means something different to everyone, generally to mean whatever is most convenient for them. MatrixSkye Mk2: "Remember: You consent to unconsensual PVP the moment you press the "Undock" button." |

As a fellow minmatar, I feel compelled to point out that it's NOT sand, it's actually your pod's filters throwing coolant out as a solid instead of a liquid. Adjust your settings.
Also, it seems to be a sandbox. As happens with sandboxes, complex structures develop. |

Those are their goals, not mine. What about the roaming explorer who really gets a kick out of slipping under the pirate's noses as he explores lowsec, or slipping around Null staying off the radar slowly making billions?
How about the trader who, in lieu of focusing on wealth entirely, has dedicated his fortune and abilities to taking control of just one hub: Maybe it's a small mission hub, but no trades go on there that he isn't in control of, due to his extremely efficient support network. He is a PvPers like no other, who guards his territory fiercely.
The man whose entire life is theft. Maybe he's a ninja. Maybe he's an awoxer or a a corporation infiltrator.
The missionbear?
The guy for whom corporations and hierarchies don't matter, for whom social popularity and widespread trust are the goal? Those who serve the community as a whole to the point that even the scum of the universe hold him in high regard.
Point is, I see no "natural" goals in eve, except the accumulation of wealth. And for 95% of the player base that is not a goal. It's a means to an end, so that they can achieve their real goal: A goal they themselves came up with.
Yes, this game is a sandbox, but as a hardcore solo player I think you focus too much on the corporate structures that take all the spotlight. Look around you and you'll see a thriving player ecosystem and metagame for which corporations hold little interest. |
