I know to clone to preserve my skill points, but what I don't know is why. If I understand correctly, when you die, you do not lose any skills. Why do I need to preserve the points? Does it have something to do with a skill I am in the middle of learning? Thanks in advance for your answers and your patience.

You lost 75% (I think) of the SP in your highest trained skill if you die (podkilled) without an up-to-date clone. ---------------------------

My understanding is that if you get killed with a clone that is out of date relative to your skill points, you'll lose the best level off your highest ranked skill. So if I have lvl 5 battleship trained, I'll have level 4 and lose about a month of training if I get capped.
thankfull, my longest skill is only like 20 days, and keeping an uptodate clone around should never be too expensive. if it is, stop getting into combat! ---

I thought you lost 5% of your uninsured skillpoints from the maximum skill i.e. if you had 30mil and an uninsured clone you'd lose 1.5mil from the biggest skill you had (BS5?). That would set you back by about a month of skill training

Really wish CCP would get off their buts and clarify this once and for all Its exceedingly basic, need to know information about how the game works, the kind of information that should be listed somewhere, prominently.
Instead every week or two someone else asks the same questions, and once again theres about 20+ different answers.
Anyhow, as for the OP: if you lose skillpoints and perhaps lose a level (i.e. from BS level 5, down to BS level 4) you lose that level of bonus the skill gives you.

i thought that if you got pod killed with an out of date clone then you go back to the number of skill points that the clone can hold, e.g. if you have 1 mil sp but your clone can only hold 500k then you drop back to 500k sp

While the actual amount of time/skill points lost isn't clear, the message is! Ensure your clone covers all your skill points!
You can save on clone money if you don't venture into 0.0 by buying a clone that is at a higher level than your current need, to stop repeatedly buying them. | Join eve-webring.com to promote your site. |

no that would suck bigtime... Im fairly sure you lose a proportion, evidently i dont think anyone really knows and i dont really want to test it

Yeah. Way too dangerous to test. Always check your clone at least once a month to make sure its up-to-date and will be for another month or so. ---

I have a question about clones/implants. I know you lose your implants when podded, but if you get podded while training a skill with implants, does your training stop so you'd have to retrain using the now lesser attributes? Or do you continue training with pre-podded time remaining until your done/switch to another skill?

training times gets adjusted to reflect your latest attributes (means that training actually gets longer if u lose implants) ...
A funny thing is that, when you get cloned, you get your base attributes (no learning) until you undock (at least, happened to me recently) ... I got frigthened when I saw 47 days remaining to train cruiser lvl.5 !! ____________
